Need New Shocks........ - 6G Celicas Forums

After two years on the Tein S-Tech springs, the shocks on our car are rattling like a mofo going over bumps now. I initially thought it was a tie rod end or a ball joint, but I had the car on a lift and everything checked out fine. Anyway.....

I was initially going to go with Bilstein shocks/struts, but they're only available in the touring for stock ride height. So I'm back to the drawing board here. I'm looking for a performance minded shock that's meant for lowered cars, and I'm not coming up with a whole lot.

Coil Overs are NOT an option right now. Too much money. So, what are you guys using?
Many people side with the KYB gas shocks/struts. They work well with the height the tein springs provide. Just make sure in advance if your fronts are rebuildables or sealed before you go out and purchase yourself a set.
koni's FTW! adjustable and comfy. I don't have them on my celi but a friend has them on his scooby and i like the ride.

That's what I've been racking my brain over. It's been almost two years since I lowered the car and I can't remember for the life of me what the struts looked like. Any chance of telling which one I have from this pic?

Admittedly, I saw the Koni's, but for $600 for a set (for the pricing that I have found), I'd hold off and go with coil overs after a little while longer.

Call the dealership with your vin number and get a quote on the struts with a P/N - that'll tell you which ones you have wink.gif

should it matter if you have sealed or rebuildables if you order sealed ones?? arent they the same just one is rebuildable and the other isnt. i say if you're unsure just get the sealed ones.

whether or not you have rebuildables, I'd get the sealed struts anyway. It's only a couple bucks more and it makes the install so much easier. I got the rebuildable ones for the front and sealed for the back (all celicas need the sealed for the back), and it was a lot less messy to just put a whole new shock on rather than try to dissassemble it, put more fluid in, clean up all the fluid that spilled, etc. I'd say it's worth the extra $15 or $20 it is to get the sealed ones on the front.

u ran s-techs on the OEM shocks? damn, and i thought someone had said they would only last a little while when mixing OEM shocks with aftermarket lowering springs. i would just say go with the KYB GR-2s. unless you have the money (which you stated you don't) i would go for some tein coilovers. the gr-2s are relatively cheap and you can just save up for a set of coilovers later smile.gif

since you have a 99, you'll need to buy the whole shock, not just the insert. aka, yours are sealed.

Thanks man! That's what I was planning on doing as a "cover all" just to be safe.
does anyone have the part #s for the stock sealed struts? i know KYB gr-2 is the stock replacement but i want to see if i can get them cheaper from 1sttoyotaparts.com then i've been able to find them elsewhere. thanks
