Hi

New to this forum today I have just got some Reverse glow gauges and in need of changing the colour of the needles, dont think the stock green matches the red and blue of the glow gauges.

If I take the green rubbers of the bulbs so that the needles glow white, would painting the top of the needles with red translucent paint work ok to make them light up red?

i would say yes. you may consider getting brighter bulbs though like some polarg super white or some white 5 LED refractors

Just be veeeery careful when touching the needles. They are extremely delicate and you don't want to pull on them in any way, shape or form. Past that, it should work. By the way, welcome aboard.

Just make sure that whatever paint you use, it is somewhat translucent and apply as thin of a coating as you can get away with. Otherwise, the needles will not light up brightly enough. For mine, I used red womens nail polish.

This may be after the fact but I thought I'd add my 2¢ - I bought red glass paint from Micheal's and found that you can actually apply a reasonable amount of pressure to the needles but of course do NOT pull them up! Take your time, use a soft brush and apply several layers so when you plug back in they don't light up washed out and unevenly coated. Make sure they're dry before reinstalling or they may stick to the little black pin thing they rest against when not in use!

the top of my needles had a white cover, so I used tape to mask the sides of the needles (which are clear) and painted the top of the needle to orange.

I'll take a pic of mine and post it too so you can see what they look like painted red with the transparent glass paint. I used a Q-tip and non-acetone nail polish remover to get the white off my needles, so the light would shine through better.

lol was waiting for someone to notice that!
When I tried to change the colour of the dials awhile ago, i got abit of paint on the underside of the gauge which has stopped the bulb from lighting up the needle, looks darker than it really is tho.
