engine swap and passing CA smog - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #5426 12 posts Started by YellowTwo
i live in CA (which has very stupid car laws) and was wondering if when u swap, lets say, a 3sgte engine will it stop you from passing the smog test? and if it does stop you then is there any way to prevent that? even if it is just for the drive over to the smog test place? thanks.
since you have a 94, you could get a usdm mr2 turbo engine from a 94-95 mr2 turbo and be 100% smog legal

but if you go with a jdm engine, then it will fail the visual inspection

no more visual inspection for me! in illinois, if u pass the obd test, u only have to take the obd test. so if the OBD II system will still work with a JDM 3sgte, i should be all set. if not, i might run into a problem.. im sure ill figure it out before its 2 years from now cuz i just did my test. oooo the possibilities... muwahahahaha >biggrin.gif>

thank you kuya, thats kinda the answer i was looking for. im happy now >smile.gif>
just go and bribe someone at a smaller type smog shop... thats the easiest way, because even a 90-93 3s-gte wont meet the smog standards of your year car, they might, but prolly wont considering smog standards increase every year and manufacturers often upgrade emisions equipment.
but you have to get it every 2 years right? so im going to have to bribe someone every time i have to get it smogged? that would kinda suck. >frown.gif>
a max of $300 every 2 years, if thats a problem keep your current engine.
