Get a Front Clip! No more - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #53549 16 posts Started by Dr_Tweak
So, new EPA regulations no longer allow front clips to be imported. It's engine sets only from here on out. Make sure you get everything you need for the swap when you get one smile.gif

LOL laugh.gif Why would you do such a thing. I'd rather drive a non modded celica over anything civic any day.

QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
I haven't seen any info from the EPA but this information comes directly from my friend Mike at Jarco. They are experts in importing so I'm sure he knows what he's talking about.

It's not really a big deal as long as you are dealing with a good importer and you know what questions to ask. We never got front clips even when we could get them. Just print out the list of everything to get and you'll be all set. Jarco is one importer that's extremely good about this... even though you aren't going to get the sheetmetal of the front clip, you're basically going to have everything that you would have if you did!

pwn3d!! biggrin.gif

If this really is the case, it isn't a huge deal. It will however force people to shop smarter when looking for an engine set and make sure that they have everything they might need for the swap before buying.

I bought my 3rd gen as an engine set, and before I bought it I made sure it had EVERYTHING. Sure enough, it had every last part that I needed and then some. I even had the VIN plate, airbox resonator and piping, front axles, and so forth.

My word of advice to future swappers - take your time, buy smart, and plan for the worst case scenario ahead of time. wink.gif

3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting.
Yeah well said. And quite frankly, even if you are missing something, finding the right part isn't a big deal. Heck, we actually had 3SGTEs here in the US. Not as much can be said for some parts on 4EFTE, 4AGE 20v, or 4AGZE engines.

"B. (2) Engine not in Vehicle or Chassis

EPA regulates the entire vehicle, not individual parts, for cars, light trucks, and motorcycles. If an engine is not installed, and is to be used in a car, motorcycle, or light truck, it may be imported as an automotive part. No approval or Customs bond is required by EPA. Importers should be aware, however, that replacement of an engine in a U.S. version vehicle with an engine of a different type or model year which is not currently covered by an EPA certificate or will be covered by an EPA certificate prior to introduction into commerce may violateEPA regulations.

To import an engine for use in a car, light truck or motorcycle, the importer must file with U.S. Customs, upon entry, an EPA Form 3520-1 and declare code "W" on that form.

For a "heavy" vehicle or "heavy" truck, EPA regulates the engine, whether or not it is installed. EPA considers a vehicle or truck as "heavy" if it has a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 8,500 pounds, or a curb weight of more than 6,000 pounds. To be imported, such an engine must be either excluded, exempted, covered by an EPA certificate of conformity, or imported by an independent commercial importer."

either that isn't the up-to-date article or you are wrong.
