Transmission issue - 6G Celicas Forums

Like recently, I've noticed that getting the shifter into 2nd and 4th gear has been kind of.....mushy(?)....Today, I was getting ready to leave Sonic and the car wouldn't get into reverse. Started to panic a bit kindasad.gif while playing with the gears and was finally able to get it into reverse. Now the shifter doesn't even wanna get into 2nd, 4th, and R. I can pull it into it's designated spot, but it'll pop back into neutral. Clutch pedal feels fine; just no even gears. frown.gif When the car's off though, it'll get into gear just fine, but once it's warmed up, it's a no go. Not sure exactly how to explain it.

Any ideas?

Luckily my mechanic's around the corner, but even that trip's gonna suck.....

hell, with the how short the gears are on the 5s, you don't even need 2nd and 4th. I've done it actually, just shifted from 1st, then 3rd, then 5th. it's not too bad if you rev to like 4500+ rpms. anyway, I thought that one shifter cable on the car controls 1st, 3rd, and 5th, and the other controls 2nd, 4th, and reverse. so it could very well be a shifter cable

Pull off your shifter trim and check the cables. Make sure the metal clips are still in place.

So yup. both shift cables done broke. Mechanic said they're like $200 per cable from Toyota, so he told me to try and source'em elsewhere and he'll just charge us $90 for labor. Anyone know where I could get a pair for my 5SFE for cheap? He said there's one website where it could be had for like $50 or something. car-parts.com didn't have them listed unless I'm looking under the wrong name or something. Any ideas? anyone?

Well, I was able to find a junk yard that happened to have a pair for $100. Hopefully it's the right one. Was there a difference between the ST and the GT shift cables?

because the ST and GT have different transmissions, I'd say their shifter cables probably will be different. though I don't know for sure.
