help plz evil stock suspension - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #51423 13 posts Started by Vissi
Well i finally got around to putting on my stechs and my kyb's today. Well i started atleast.
Is the top bolt on the struts saposed to move the whole strut? I cant seem to get it off because when i try to take it off, the silver metal piece in the middle of the strut moves with it, along with the cap. Surely theres a trick to it or something XP.
Thanks

put the suspension back on the car. attach the top 3 nuts to hold the assembly in. (no need to do the bottom)
loosen the large center bolt first till you have a few threads left.
remove from car
you should be able to pop it off pretty easy from this point.
just be careful the spring = potential energy, when the nut comes off it will go POP...and shoot the nut ~12 inches away.
i attached em but still no luck. this is the part that is moving.

yea i know that part, your's probably slipped outta its slot.

the shaft @ the top isn't a full circle where the threads are its more like a "D" shape so that it seats into the tophat and doesn't spin.

since yours is spinning (like OEM VW) you'll need air tools/electric impact
to get it off, or figure out how to get it seated back correctly.
damnet, i used all the money i had buying new tires and these shocks, o well i guess itl have to wait till a later time.
thanks for the help

Would using spring compressors help at all maybe?

I was just thinking that maybe if i compressed the spring that i could adjust back on the strut mount. Feasible?

Any way for you to clamp the inner tube so it cant move? Make sure you wrap it with something thick so it does not receive any digs.

:.....Flush Wheel Fitment Guide.....:
if the top of the strut isnt lined up with the mount its gonna keep spinning, there is a shape you gotta fit in...looks like [)

^put it together correctly.
I got mine out with an impact gun. if try other methods and still cant get it off, as a last possibility, i would look for the nearest shop that has an impact gun, have them break it loose... then tighten it a little bit with a ratchet, then slowly drive the car home. WHen you get home you should now be able to just break it loose with your ratchet. then take it back for them to tighten it with the gun again.
I don't know a shop in the world that will let you drive out of there like that... not safe.
If your gonna go to a shop just take the struts and coils with you ask the guy for a little help, and if he's nice he'll do it for six pack or $20. Don't get yourself killed please. The best way to do stock springs is to use a spring compressor... period. Aftermarket, you can switch and swap no problem.
