Advanced Timing: Good or Bad? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #51229 11 posts Started by xs94st
Hey guys I got an NA ST 7afe n i was just wondring about advancing my timing. I know that you can gain some hp in the wheels, but is it good for the car? Also, how exactly can u advance your timing? Can a local shop do it for you? Does fuel octane have a minimum for maximum power? Thanks in advance! haha

yea was thinking about doing this too, i know that timing lights are ~$50 and its not hard too do yourself, but thats all i know...
the how-to on the internet for the 5th gen 5sfe works just fine to use for the 7afe, yes you need to bump up your octane.

no need to have a shop do it. you just need a $50 timing light (or borrow a friend's), and a 12mm socket with wratchet. if you don't have that, you could probably do it with a 12mm wrench. you just need to loosen one bolt, spin the distributor, and tighten the bolt back up.

is there any long term effects that may damage your engine?

2 bolts, one is a REAL pain to get to.

more heat and pressure, increased chance of knock, probably just a little more wear and tear than you'd normally get. i've been advanced for about 7k miles now without really any ill effects to speak of.

ok, I guess the 7a has two bolts. 5s has one.

as long as you use a higher octane gas, and don't advance TOO far, you won't hurt anything.

bingo, with an intake or just a derestricted airbox 5deg of timing really added some smooth power to the engine. all the way from off idle and it faded just around 5000 rpm. the header killed the fade and moved the power to the midrange.

any noticable power gain on a 15 degree advance?
and what octane do u run on with 15 degrees?

yeah, I noticed a difference in accelleration. I ran it on 91 octane no problem, then I advanced to 18 on 91 octane still with no problems, then I went back to 15 but used 89 octane, again with no problems.
