Hi guys,

Does anyone know how to fix a non-functional engine cooling fan on a 3SGE motor? Or even what could be causing it not to come on when the engine gets hot? Sick of using the interior heating to cool the engine down when in traffic!

Fan temp sensor? Relay? Dead fan? Try jumping the fan directly to the battery. f it turns on... then your problems are elsewhere. If not... well... dead fan.

I'll try jumping the fan to the battery, but if it works, then it could be any one of the electrical contacts/connections. Just wondered if it was a common fault with a simple fix.

Well... I've had a look at my engine cooling fan(s) and still can't get them working. I ran a direct feed from the battery to each of the fans and they both switched on. But somewhere the system has broken down cos they still don't automatically come on when the engine is hot. I'm wondering if its a dodgy relay or even the temp sensor in the bottom of my radiator? I've checked the electrical connections and they seem fine.

Has anybody had a similar problem or could shed some light on this for me?

Most of the people on CCUK who have had this problem have found it to be the temp sensor - perhaps do a search on there as I would imagine there's a simple way of testing it

That's what I'm thinking mate. I've had the connector off the sensor last weekend and the contacts are good, so it must be the sensor itself.

One of the guys at my local Toyota dealer said there's 2 sensors! One in the rad and the other in the thermostat housing. I changed my thermostat last year (as I believed it could have been that causing the problem) and don't recall seeing any sensor in the housing. I'll check CCUK then might just replace the sensor in the rad and have done with it!

There's no sensor on the thermostat housing for the 3SGE motor, thats only on the 7A motor.

The AC condenser fan should always have power, and the relay supplies a ground. If there's no power at this fan, then its the CDS fuse.
If it has power, pull the #2 fan relay and make sure pin #4 on the fuse box has a good ground signal and pin 3 has power. Then jump pins 3 and 4, this should start the fan (and means the relay is bad).

The radiator fan is a little different, but the relay operates the same way. Pull the #1 fan relay and verify that pin 3 has power (which is coming from RDI fuse) and pin 4 has a ground (which is going through the fan). Jump these two wires and the fan should start.

Neither of the fans work, even with the aircon switched on. If I wire the fans directly to the battery, they work so I know they are OK. I've been told the sensor in the bottom of the rad is bad, so I've ordered a new one from Toyota which I will replace this weekend. Failing that, I guess both the relays or associated fuses could be faulty but I'm hoping its just the sensor. In any event, where are the CDS and RDI fuses located?

The sensor in the radiator is more like a thermal switch then a sensor. It provides a ground signal when the temp is within range, then opens (breaking the circuit, triggering the relay, and turns the fans on) when the temp goes beyond. So if you unplug the wire going to this 'sensor', the fans should turn on - if they dont, then a new sensor won't fix anything.

The CDS and RDI fuses are in the engine comp fuse block, as are the relays. All of the 6th gen's use the same fuse boxes. so this should help:
