You can sit on my lap, and ill spin you like a top.

haha kidding.

Anyways. I have a dell and i love it.
Well, you should list all the stuff you want to do on it.
Both of Vissi's recommended choices (the Asus and the Dell) are good.

The asus will play all the games you'll want.

The dell will be a great basic school computer for a low price (you'll need to upgrade to the dvd burner if you need it though)
i'm anti-gamer, so i definitely, absolutely do not need any computer with added features for gaming. i think i may just get a dell.

^ i dont get it

ever think HP....there not as well know (like they dont have as big a marketing campain as dell does) but they can give u comperable processing power for a lower price then dell.

when i bought my desktop a year ago. i got mine for 1300$ wit a 200$ rebate. the same dell was gonna be 1500 to 1600$ no rebate...just somethign to keep in mind.

>>Ive got a Dell Inspiron 9300 it cost about 1900 bucks, only reason it cost so much is because its decked out for gaming and it has a 4 year warranty which includes a personal tech guy who will come to your house and fix anything wrong with it , but it has basically every option which is also great when i use it for school. Ive heard alot of bad things about toshiba and hp laptops, but ive heard that the sony vaio's are pretty decent. smile.gif But basically if you have the choice go dell or sony, both have served me well, and for your price range they will both do great. wink.gif

it really depends on what your preference is: portiblity vs performance. You can get hard core portiblity notebooks that is small and light, but it doesn't have a cd-rom drives. Or you can get a desktop replacement that will chew through your battery in a hour but will be as fast as your regular PC.

For me, I'm using a IBM thinkpad t43. Its a nice balanced laptop, the thickest part is 1.2 inches. The major concern for me was; i wanted something light, and have a long battery life and still be able to do what a normal desktop can do. My laptop costed me about $1700 with everything upgraded ( 2 gigs of ram/ extra battery ect). 3 year warrenty

So jen, if you want something light and durable. I recomend a IBM (lenovo) or a Mac. They both make high quality laptops with good reputation and performance vs portablitly. But if your don't care about size or battery life, you move onto the other brands. They offer a faster machine and more bang for your buck. But the bad side is, you get less battery life and it weights a bit more. Remember each company has a good laptop, they won't be in business today if all there laptops are junk. And a warrenty is good because if anything breaks, you generally can't buy parts to fix it on your own.

Browse through here and see if anything catches your eye.

i'm not sure about Dell over there but over here it's pretty average, although it's cheap compared to the known brands such as Sony, IBM etc, but i find that the design structually looks pretty "cheap" compared to it's competitors, also when it comes down to fixing it, opening the bugger it a prick, but yeah i would prefera known brand over Dell anyday
fujitsu, acer, ibm, toshiba, etc etc
i can hook you up with a sony vaio C250 for $1200 jen. PM me. and it's brand new.

Bulky laptop? or tiny portable laptop?

thick & bulky = dell, compaq, toshiba....
thin & tiny = sony, apple...

In reference to the comment "I want a non-game machine".

Also in consideration is, do you really want a "new" machine?

If you don't mind about an used machine, you could go to Craigslist and buy a used laptop for A LOT cheaper, just make sure it hasn't past that 1 year warranty, so you could add 2 extra years of extended warranty to it.

I wish I had that kind of money up front, I'm putting down $500 and financing the rest through whatever company I buy it from. Unless you offer some kind of payment plan, I can't. :x Sorryyy.

I looked at some of the listings in my area, and none of them interested me. Plus, I would prefer a new one as I got a used one in the past, and it's a piece.

acer

again acer ftw.

had mine for almost two years and zero problems, but i would recommend getting a 5000 series as they are more feature packed

and the best part about acers is they're very nicely priced. mine was about $700 when all said and done `
i've never been a fan of acer... always found their stuff cheap. dell i would say is avg... their cust service is gd... until it expires... i like asus laptops more.

i dont think you need that great of a notebook if u just want to browse and do nothing special...i use my parents old p3 550mhz laptop for browsing and it works just fine..

i dont think itll break down on you...unless its a lemon in general
i just found a nice dell for $900. i figure that will work. i'm just using it to take to school and such.

why not a Mac? i have an ibook g4. i have had it for over a year, not one virus, not one crash not, one pop up add. I mean depeneding on the apps u will use the Mac is the best. mine is over a year old, and it has features most new laptops dont come with. It was $1200 and it has bule tooth and air port extreme built in and 80 mb HD. I mean one u go Mac, u will never go back. So easy 2 use and NO viruses.
