sorry to open up an old thread. But I'd love to see a 5VZFE put into a celica. Whats the chances of matching it up w/ a FWD trans to not have to convert to RWD? I'm also thinking about a 6cyc lexus motor so I could have a Lexus Celica
Crazy Engine Swaps I'd Like To Do.... - 6G Celicas Forums
the chances of a 5VZ bolting up to a compatible transmission is %100. it bolts right up to a E-153 or S54
which lexus V6 specificly? they have 3VZFE, 1MZFE, 3MZFE, 2GRFE and 2GRFSE.

thanks man, Idk. I'd have to check out specs. Look at aftermarket availabilty. And play the numbers. I'm getting the itch to get my celicas engine taken care of. Its my extra vehicle so I can afford to have it parked for a few months. And want to start getting it in show condition. The 3MZFE sounds good though because it'll still get me good gas mileage where the 5VZFE would give me a little better then my truck I drive everyday.
the best source of information is on the MR2OC forum and MR2 Board

and of course, good old wikipedia for basic specs

I was already on http://www.v6mr2.com/ checking out the engine specs. I'm leaning towards 5VZFE only because of the TRD S/C. But then again I want the TRD S/C for my 4.0 Tacoma. I need to step away from the computer
I guess it comes down to if I want to keep an NA setup or force induction down the road.

well i have bought and torn down a 5vz, jsut ordered the forged pistons. Been keeping this project under wraps, cuz il lget bombared with pic requests and i dont wantto dissapoint cuz this project will take forever, about a year plus. I ll have the engine built up by end of summer, and all turbo components by end of year. After that next is saving up to actually put it in. Funny thing my dumbass hasnt decided on tranny setups yet, i know what all ones bolt up but i seriously doubt the fwd will fit i have to measure and research. Ill most likely have a rwd or awd conversion done. And before people bash me about how much it costs...i have almost no bills a good job and im spreading this project over a long time span.
>
I'm pretty sure a E-153 setup will work. Unless you're absolutely going for a RWD or AWD setup
Good luck with the swap.

dear mr.tweak, you prob dont know or remember me. but i've been stalking you for a while. the only issue i have with you is you're half way around the world (in in nyc.) but any who....im veeeery serious about these 3 options. i am currently saving to do something big around this time next year. your prices are right up my ally. i really like your turn key ways. i am more than happy to pay you for your work. but like i said...next year is my trigger time.
1. this is the most attractive of the 3, not because of price....but because of its humble set up. it retains the front wheel drive...with a decent amount of hp....but myfear is that engine. is it battle ready? lets be serious....even tho its built like a rock...its built to be driven in a lux car....can it handle the beating we give on our 53\3s so on and so forth? hmmmmmm
can i slap a turbo on there and not worry? hmmmmmm
2. i reeeeally like this one. awd??? 3rd gen 3s??? sounds like a go. but how will this affect the car itself? isn't the gt4 chasis a lil diffrent from the american gt? while you can make it work...will it work the way its supposed to? do i have to worry about chasis flex?
3. same issues as the awd...but a lil more worry-some. you take an awd platform and force it into rwd....how will the car react....then you slap the 2j in it??? lol...wow!!! its gottah be loads of fun. but is it safe controllable fun? hmmmm
without a doubt lsd will help calm all 3 options down....but will that be enough? Im all for the engine madness...but i just need to know about the over all well being and balance of the car.
in any event...if you can sell me on how practical any or all of these swaps are....then you and i will have a really good summer next year.

>You guys all know that I've been doing swaps in Celicas for a long time, and after doing enough of the 3SGTE, 3SGE, 4AGE swaps, etc, I'm feeling the need for something a little off the wall. I have a feeling that there are some Celica owners out there who are thinking the same thing, they want something a little different. I've got three projects in mind that I'd be interested in doing, and I might even give a discount if someone steps up to the plate to have one done.
1. 1UZFE swap. The 1UZFE is the 4.0 V8 engine from the Lexus LS400. It makes between 265 and 300hp depending on the version. I would like to swap this engine, FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE, into a Celica, using an E153 or E58 transmission (LSD optional). I have personally seen this done sideways in a MK1 MR2, which is no bigger, if not smaller, than the Celica engine bay. We have all the equipment needed at my shop, and besides me, we now have another expert fabricator and tig welder that we just hired. I estimate the TOTAL cost of the engine swap, including the engine, transmission, all custom metal fabrication and installation, turn-key and ready to go out the door, at $9000.
2. AWD 3SGTE conversion. This one has been done before and there's a number of threads recently on the subject. I've been ready to do one of these for a while, so if there's someone out there serious about having it done, I'm up for it. I estimate the cost of the whole conversion, including all the parts, 3SGTE engine (3rd gen) and transmission, labor, fabrication, and so on, turn-key and ready to roll, at $11,000.
3. 1JZGTE or 2JZGTE swap and conversion to REAR WHEEL DRIVE. Not a typo. You know what it is, you know you want it. We can do it. Total cost including everything: $12,000.
WHO'S UP?!

1. This is my favorite of the three as well because while being a totally crazy swap, it's also keeping it simple by not changing the overall aspect of the car. The 1UZ is a fantastic engine, quite possibly the most reliable engine Toyota has ever built. It does use an aluminum block, so a low boost turbo system could be done with proper tuning and good quality parts.
2. The chassis is indeed different, this would be a major project but at the same time it has been done a couple of times so that's good to know. With this swap many things would have to be done to ensure the integrity of the chassis. The first thing that I would do before anything else would be to install a full roll-cage to help keep everything stable.
3. With this swap, it would hardly be correct to even refer to the car as a Celica anymore, basically we would be using the Celica frame as a basis and build a custom car out of it. Again, a full racing rollcage would be the first step. As for being safe and controllable.... that all depends on the driver
Needless to say these prices are subject to change so if anyone decides that they want to do a swap like this, contact me.

I want to know if I add a v6 camry 5spd tranny to my 5sfe if my original 5sfe axles would work on the v6 trans?
I'd like to try the V8 but I dont have 9000 lying around. However would totally donate my car.

I guess you're talking about option #2, which is convert a Celica to AWD with a 3SGTE swap.
I saw earlier today a complete 3SGTE ST205 front clip AND the complete rear subframe, rear diff and axles, and driveshaft with the center carrier. Now THAT would be the way to go. If I were to take a project like this one, I would first strip out the interior of the car, build a nice tig-welded stainless rollcage to keep everything nice and stable, do the engine swap with the AWD tranny to place the output shaft location. Then I would make the needed modifications to install the rear subframe with the diff and axles and hubs and so on. This would also require relocating/modifying the fuel tank. Then I would cut and build the tunnel for the driveshaft and install that into place. That's the basic overview

the 5SFE manual tranny (S54) axles won't work with the V6 manual tranny (E153). You need MR2 turbo inner and alltrac outter with a spacer for the passenger side axle.
besides, adding a E153 to a 5SFE will only make it slower, put a V6 on your S54 and burn some rubber

The Camry/Solara 5sfe 5speed will work but will require custom clutch kit. The Camry/Solara E153 will work as well but as E-KSD said you would need to fab the passenger side axle.

I am just wondering since this thread was started in Feb of 07 if these prices have gone up?
I have been quoted 5800 for just the 3s swap and another 10,000 for the AWD... Just curious to see what the price take for Option 2 is...

the 2GRFSE will not fit in FWD, without some "frankensteining" it doesn't bolt to ta E153, no axle carrier. This engine is used OEM in RWD only. Maybe a 2GRFE/2GRFSE hybrid?
That being said, I'm all for a seeing a 2GR-FE, which is probably the biggest that a 6gc can take without cutting up the engine bay. Right off the bat, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't fit.
If ever I swap again, this is would be my engine of choice. Disregarding the price of the engine.

2AZFE (Scion tC 160hp 160ft/lbs) into '96+ Celica (OBD2 emissions legal)
2GRFE, 2GRFSE, or 3MZFE into Celica (OBD2 emissions legal)

the 2GRFSE will not fit in FWD, without some "frankensteining" it doesn't bolt to ta E153, no axle carrier.

That second one looks pretty messy. Hahaha just too much stuff packed in a tight area.
I like the idea of the supercharger/turbo set up but its just too messy and too many parts to have working in such a small area.

It does look messy, yeah. Kind of like someone took a box of scrap parts and dumped them into an engine bay, LOL
For what it's worth, I did that swap/conversion for a friend basically for free, he was on a super-low budget so we didn't do things nearly as nicely as we could have.

do have pictures of any previous drive train conversions, frame extensions, or transmission tunnel fabrications?
or is this find a guinea pig to see if you actually can do this?

I'm torn between that being totally awesome or totally frightening, because achieving a good amount of power for super cheap is a good thing but if I had to drive a car like that daily I'd be absolutely terrified. Probably because I would be making it myself and I know **** all about turbos.
Still I would love to do something like that to my 7A-FE if it didn't already look like it was going to crap out in the next 6 months.

If I had something else to drive, (and a few grand laying around) I'd donate my car in a heartbeat. Somehow it seems there's just not enough web work that would ever cover this one...
