UPDATE

This thread started as my speedometer issues thread. now its changed over to tranny issues in general. I think i need a new tranny.

Issues
-Seals leak even when brand new
-Speedo gear dead
-Rough Shifting
-Metallic noise when in neutral (goes away when i push in the clutch)

what do you all think???









Ok so it worked fine.. and then started working less.. (on and off) and now just doesn't work at all.. not one bit.. I thought maybe the plug was loose, but checked that and its fine..

where is the sensor in the tranny? maybe i need to check that end of the wiring..

any ideas? i'm tired of my mileage not getting logged...

the speedo is controlled by a speedometer gear, you can see it on top of the tranny. If the teeth of the gears are worn they will not attain a speed. Only if this is the case, you can get another from the junkyard from even a camry with a 5sfe motor. Also, in my experience my rpm died in my other car, so thought a sensor went bad and then later my speedo started showing a lower speed than actual, thought again both sensors going bad. I changed the cluster and both now works so it might not be a sensor. If you don't got any testers, just find another cluster, they run about 50 avg or borrow one and test it. This is the easiest and less drastic solution. good luck.

i would check the sensor in the tranny first. located right on top of the tranny where the axles hook in also called the differential. one or two 10mm head bolts hold it in place then check the teeth. if not that, i dont know how you guys do the wiring for the swap but if you modified anything speedo related i would run that down as well as check all your ground connections. Then if all else fails try another gauge cluster?

good stuff, I'll check that ASAP. I have two extra clusters so i can easily check one of those when i get a chance.

I'll keep you all updated. I personally think its the tranny, its running like crap right now anyway so i wouldnt be surprised if that gear was worn...

PS: the car has 210,000 on it an i think the tranny is original which means i should probably just get a new one now anyway... it shifts terrible and i can't get the axle seals to hold fluid

this is exactly how the s54 gets a bar rep. ITS NOT YOUR TRANSMISSION.

axle seals leak= old seals or incorrect installation of new ones
speedo dead = 90% of the time, this is a wiring problem.
rough shifting = check your clutch pedal adjustment. if its incorrect, it will make shifting harder.
noise that goes away when you push the clutch in= very common. this is normally caused by 1 of 2 things. check the passengers side axle bracket that bolts to the block. if this is loose it will make the noise you described. if that checks out ok, then the noise is coming from your throw out bearing. do the clutch adjustment, it should fix it. if its still making noise after that, then you probably didnt lube up the throw out bearing correctly when you installed it.

Ive done axle seals twice.. and ive done them what i beleive to be correct.. twice.

I think the pedal adjustment could be a major cause of those other issues as you stated.

but, the bracket is fine, and this noise occurs while parked so possibly the throw out like you said.

And me being inexperienced, i probably didn't even lube the throwout bearing. or if i did probably not correctly.

The seals still stump me though, am i missing a part or something?




In regards to the speedo, it used to come on and off rapidly as if the gear would catch etc. I have no clue, what wiring issues could it be?

check that axle bracket. if that bracket is loose, then your axle would not be pushing into the tranny far enough and you would get a leak. it would also make the noise at idle.

if i had an extra empty bay id say come over my house and well play cars. yaaay. maybe they are selling you the wrong seals? iunno it could happen.

as for the throw out bearing u can lube it while the tranny is in place. just pull back the rubber accordion piece that surrounds the fork that the hydraulic rod pushes in and spray some lithium grease in there but be careful no to get any on the clutch disc.

he made a crack about buying a dyno the other day.... oh man i hope he does it (this is his dad of course)




anywho, I'm gonna:

-check the bracket
-possibly lube the throwout bearing
-adjust the pedal

then ill update and we can go from there

Ok so the car threw a code 42 today. in my book it states:

42-Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal
SPD signal is not input to the ECU for at least 8 seconds during high load driving with engine speed between 2,500 rpm and 5,000 rpm.

-open or short in vehicle speed sensor circuit
-vehicle speed sensor
-ecu



any ideas anyone? also can i drive with this code thrown?

check the sensor, and the wiring going to the ecu. also the little plastic gear could be stripped.

some more info:

checked the bracket and its on there nice and tight

also last sat i disconnected the plug and then plugged it in again (speed sensor one) maybe its not all the way in.
