After searching i have not quite yeilded the answers i need..

My swap is done, but my fans are wired to run all the time.
what can i do to make them come on and off at a certain temp?

should i buy a kit like this:
Two's R Us Fan Relay and Thermo

or can i figure it out without dishing out the cash?




Fuel pump relay... do i need to do anything with this? I think its on all the time, should it not be? etc. i don't want to burn the pump out.. its an SW20 pump and i usually run around 45-48psi on average when driving.

The fuel pump must be running as long as the engine is running. As for the fans, do you have the fan switch on the bottom of the radiator, near the lower radiator hose, plugged in?

Yep, or atleast it should be.
I had an extra wire coming out of the harness, and when i was finishing the swap we hooked it to a power lead and therefore it gave the fans power all the time. I remember you pointing that wire out to me when i got the harness back, do i need to wire that into the switch at the bottom of the radiator?

if you have a gt radiator, then you should just have a plug there that connects right to the radiator, without having to do any splicing or cutting. then you fans will come on/off as needed.

as for the fuel pump, you dont need that relay. all it does is switch from high to low voltage for the fuel pump. ive been running mine on high for about 3yrs with no problems.

Dont know if this will help but Toyotas relays work diffrent than most relays as they are operate as NORMALLY OPEN and not NORMALLY CLOSED like most relays.

Now onto the fan.. well i have the plug etc etc. but when i finished the swap the fans never came on. and then i remembered, that doc had flagged a wire in the engine bay on the harness that he told me was for the fan relay. I just gave this wire 12v and now the fans are on all the time. In the fall this was fine, but now since it is getting cold as balls (finally) around here.. the fans cool the engine too much and i never get over 140 degrees in the top radiator hose. If im on the highway she won't leave safe mode because she never warms up enough etc. also i have no cabin heat since the coolant never gets up to a decent temp.

Its that green wire with the yellow tape flagging it off. I beleive it may have a white stripe down it as well.

not sure what that green wire is from, but the plug for the radiator temp sensor should be on the passengers side of the car.

are you 100% sure your fans didnt come on? sometimes, depending on the weather, they can take a really long time before they will kick on. i would undo your wiring, when the car is nice and hot, and test them again to see if they work or not.

Doc, you would know better than anyone, whats that green wire flagged for again?

You know... I've greatly improved my techniques over the past few months and I don't use the same method to do the conversions anymore.... but I'm 99% sure that you do NOT need that wire hooked up. Disconnect it and let your engine warm up (keep a close eye on it) and see if the fans come on.

I'm pretty sure that the green wire goes to the CF pin on the GT ECU (the 3SGTE ECU doesn't have this pin), which I used to think was the wire the the ECU used to switch the fan on. However, I now know that the green wire only notifies the ECU that the fan is running, and it will work normally without it, since the temp switch is located on the radiator itself.

Which makes me want to look at the diagrams and figure out why the fans run with 12v going to that wire!

Are you sure the wire isnt a light green with a black stripe?

I remember when I wired up my swap I left that LG-B wire coming out of EA1 taped off. You dont need it hooked to the ecm. My cooling fans work just fine. I wonder if your thermostat is open or if yor water temp switch isnt working correctly. Maybe its just too cold for the fans to kick on.
Dr. Tweak: Correct me if Im wrong, but dont the cooling fans kick on when 12v is applied to the LG-B wire because it turnes on the fan relay no.2, then fan relay no.3, then applies power to the fan motor which is already grounded? If Im looking at this right. Later

the more i think about it the fans could have easily been fine before i hooked 12v to the green wire. I'm going to snip it tomorrow and take a drive around the base and see what happens.

ok so i snipped that wire.. but strangly enough they are still on all the time now..?!?

Is your coolant temp switch plugged in? If all your sensors are connected, its probably your coolant temp switch.
