question about FMIC - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #44734 13 posts Started by toyotacrazy
I just installed a FMIC and 2" piping with a turbo xs bypass valve. It is recirculated. Now Im hearing a loud whistle, sounds like the turbo spooling up. It only happens when boosting while in the petal. Is this normal? I just want to make sure nothing is wrong. Also my boost seems low. I was boosting 7-9 with the top mount intercooler. now Im boosting 6-6.5. Maybe I need to drive it to let the ecm relearn??????? Thanks for any input..

you have a leak in your setup

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
so it shouldnt whistle or make a loud spooling sound???
the less boost is probably due to a pressure drop in the system...typical of a not so high quality setup

i wouldn't so much think a leak would "whistle"

but search "boost leak finder" and use that setup and find out if you have a leak

if your hearing something funny...and your getting less boost then you did with the top mount, then chances are the sound you hear is your leak. sometimes its a loose coupler or sometimes you need to adjust your bov.

at the very least, you should be able to hit 10psi.

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
well, Im hitting about 2 psi less at most. It is a cheaper intercooler. Maybe its restricted in the intercooler. I am pretty sure the whistle is the turbo spooling up. I did notice that when Im approaching 0 psi when its pulling out of vacuum it whistles. Or the bov is allowing blowby because the spring is too weak. Ill try swapping it with a stiffer spring since I know someone with one handy.
Is there any way you can trick the wastegate on the 3sgte? I know on the single turbo supra by putting a stack of washers between the wastegate and the turbo you could increase boost. I think the setup of the 3sgte is different.
just unplug your wastegate hose, it should boost through the roof laugh.gif

no but honestly you'd have to have a really really really poor BOV to leak at 0psi

Before I put the fmic on I pinched off the wastegate hose. The boost hit 14 psi then went into fuel cut. Im just looking for a free of cost way to increase my boost. I may just end up getting a manual boost controller.
i wouldn't install an MBC until you confirm your problem.

I still have a stock gt exhaust. With the dp convertor and gt convertor....source of problem??????
yea you need to get rid of that your exhaust system can't flow enough gas to allow boost to build

its like blowing into a paper towel tube...you can blow lots very fast
then try to blow into a McDonalds straw, all that air backs up and takes forever

no. your problem is that you have a boost leak. make a tester and find the source of your leaks. its either because of your bov, an intercooler coupler or a vac line. its as simple as that.

then, if you want to run more boost, get a cheap mbc. dont try to ghetto rig something, or you'll regret it later

i had a very restrivtive exhaust on my car too at one point. it still boosted to the stock 10psi, just fine.

15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
I did fix what I think was a boost leak. I retorqued all my IC piping connectors and they had loosened up quite a bit. After that It ran much better and the whistle sound is pretty much gone. I was boosting a little higher around 7. I removed all the bolts from the wastegate and installed 4 washers between the wastegate and the turbo housing. WOW! Now I hit 10 psi every time. What a HUGE difference! Thanks for all the advice...
