Hood/engine lining - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #44389 24 posts Started by Slick
Does anyone know if there would be any serious problems if the lining on the inside of the hood were to be removed permenantly? Mine is getting pretty nasty and i'm very tempted to remove it, especially because i plan on getting the whole car repainted soon and it would stick out like a sore thumb when i pop the hood.

I don't have any at all. Never did, even when I bought the car. Hope that helps!

Great! Mine's coming off this weekend! biggrin.gif

You didn't have any color fade on your hood, or anything like that because of the heat from the engine?

many cars dont have them at all- my 96 celica st didn't
correct me if im wrong but i think it helps from ruining the paint on top of your hood with all the heat coming up from the engine and all like you said (color fade)

That would be my guess too. Thanks!

if i'm not way off i think it's there in case of fire, the plastic things melt and the lining will fall down to prevent it from getting oxygen
^^uh, oh. didn't think about that one.

Just keep a small fire extinguisher handy in your trunk or under your passanger seat (where mine is).
its for sound/heat.

'95 ST here, no hood lining since I got the car in '97. No paint fade either; until the rest of the car did that is. :)

Yeah, i've got no paint fade either. And haven't had any issues with fire since I bought the car! Lol.

I think maybe toyota put inner hood linings on the GT but not on the ST. Thats why some of you have them and some do not. Perhaps it gets hotter under the hood of a GT because it has a bigger engine. I would personally like to know if removing the lining from my GT hood would cause a problem though because I'm tired of looking at it. Does anyone here have a GT with no lining? If so, has it caused any problems?
wash it with a pressure washer gently and then you can spray on heat wrap coating to make it whatever color you want it.

my GT has hood lining on it. makes it kinda heavy.

i took tha lining off of my gt early last yr. and havent had a prob. yet.
Think my fade maybe due to the bare manifold chucking out loads of heat!

Thats a good point, I have two GT's and one ST and both GT's have the liner and the ST doesn't... never noticed that connection before..
I doubt the GTs having a liner is due to the 400cc extra displacement of the 5S. It's more likely becuase of the orientation of the GT's engine which puts the exhaust manifold facing more toward the hood if anything. Just imo, of course.
Mine was torn when I purchased the car so I took it off. Few years, no problems... I see steam coming off the hood on rainy days but thats it.
In the UK the ST doesn't have it and the GT does same as you guys are seeing.

I have removed mine and if my highly strung 3SGE doesn't affect the paint then you should be OK. The GT4 guys in the UK remove it as well with no problems.

Well, mine has been off now for about a week and no immediate difference noticed. I'm sure that it would take some time to fade if in fact it does, so i'll keep an eye on it. But from everyone's input, i don't think I'll have to worry about it anytime soon.

BTW Al, nice care and welcome to 6GC! smile.gif
