I didn't notice this until a friend of mine pointed this out to me, but if I'm cruising in 5th gear at 80MPH, is my engine supposed to be spinning at 4000RPMs? At ~45MPH, it's rotating at about 2400RPMs. Now I know this my be a different car, but in the 5SFE auto Camry that I used to drive, 2000RPMs at the highest gear was 50MPH. Anyone else with a GT notice this or is it just me?

mine GT does that too...something to do with our car being long and not short...(engine wise)?...i don't really know...

I belive its because celi's have shorter gears to make it a sportier feel.

Go look up the gear ratios for the transmission used in your Celica... the answer is in the gear ratios. The transmission is selected based on available HP of the engine, where the power band of that engine resides, the required torque in ft-lbs for the vehicle and the desired top speed.

Other factors play in transmission selection , like a "sporty feel" where the manuafacturer wants the engine to rev higher inthe power band prior to the shift point.

Try turning off the overdrive in the Camry, and it will be revving just as high as the celi. I know cuz I have both cars .

it's because the gears are really short. it's the exact same for my manual GT. 80mph at 4K in 5th... I wish 5th gear was a little longer so it could get better freeway milage... but I really like the short 1-4 gears.

I like the 5th gear..its so short that you dont even need to downshift to feel power on the higher!

That's exactly what a friend of mine was saying the other night. leave the first 4 gears alone, just open up 5th gear a bit more to get better gas mileage. He loves everything about my car 'cept for that li'l 5th gear thing. He's contemplating on swapping the seats in his Integra for celica seats. heheh.

Matt - i didn't realize it till Jose (dual exhaust Integra) pointed it out the other night when I let him drive my car.

Rangemaster - I've no idea what my gear ratios are. how do i find that out? how can i change that 5th gear ratio a bit to open it?

Man i was just thinking about this earlier as i was driving. At 80mph it was at about 3800 or so. really wasteful on gas. I have a e-153 and so i began to wonder how the 5sfe tranny was but i guess its the same thing or very little difference. I wish we had a 6tth gear

I believe the gear ratios for the S54 are:


Ratio Top Speed (w/ 205/55/15 tires, and a 6400rpm redline)
1st 3.285 32.03 MPH
2nd: 1.960 53.69 MPH
3rd: 1.322 79.6 MPH
4th: 1.028 102.36 MPH
5th: 0.820 128.33 MPH
Final drive: 4.176

I got 133 top speed before - on an S-curve! Where did you get that 128mph top speed from? It's definetly not correct.

perhaps you are using a different tire size? those numbers are for a 205/50/15 tire. if you had a 225/45/16 tire, your top speed becomes 133.33 mph. At least according to this calculator

interesting...haven't tested out the top speed thing yet. I need to find a long open mile of road to try it on.

eggman40 - i was thinking the same thing. i thought these cars were supposed to have pretty good gas mileage...i mean, being a 4-cylinder NA afterall. as for the 6th gear bit, I almost did that once when i saw the tach touch 3800rpm going close to 80. if i hadn't caught myself, i would've f**ked something up.

Mine wont let me go into reverse and don't ask me how I know that. LOL
It could have been on my 205-45r16 Parada's but I seem to remember doing it on stock tires and rim. Alex know the spot by my house. An open, banked lazy "S"curve with noone to kill but me an some cows and it would take some work to hit them.
Actually we lost an '01 Celica GTS @132mph there. Supposedly to a deer
