i had 3 projects in my first shop class, one was a clock. had aluminum base, with brass and steel pencil holders and an acrylic face to hold the clock. not too difficult, but tolerances were really tight. processes included sawing, milling, turning/facing, tapping (both internal and external threads), drilling/reaming, counterboring/sinking, finishing (sanding for holders and beadblasting the base), and cnc. heres a few crappy phone pics i took a while ago.

dont know if this is exactly what you are looking for or if this is too easy, just throwing out ideas.
