thanks,

Dustin
my lil bro did the same thing in his mr2 and it does seem to make a difference. We were told to do that by or neighbor.

hmm interesting... id like to know what it does and how it makes it louder
basically wut i does and seal the box better and put more pressure on the back of the subs to make them hit smoother and makes the sub stiffer..... And most the time sealed boxs do sound better than ported
the cotton or "batting" creates an additional buffer for the soundwaves diffusing noise and vibration on the backside of the speaker.
Ported versus sealed all depends on what sounds you want to achieve. A sealed box produces tighter more pronounced bass "kick" where as a ported enclosure will spread out the low tones and give a wider variety of tones.
The cotton won't come out if you use a spray adhesive on the back of the box before you put your batting in there. I use the same spray adhesive for this as I do for carpeting my boxes.

I've always added filler to my boxes. I've heard that adding between 20-40% fill in a box is best, but use a looser fill like quilt batting. Carpet underlay or spray foam is a lot denser and doesn't have a as great an effect on sound waves.

I've also heard that the sound wave diffusion caused by the batting creates the effect of having a larger box in a smaller enclosure as the compression is changed. Whether this is true, I don't know, but in all the sealed boxes I have run, I found adding a few layers of batting to it cleaned up the sound and made it smoother.
same effect goes for the bass drum on a drum set.

after years of being an ICE comp sorta person i'd personally say it's worthless unless your sounds are that bad & even then still silly & would rather spend a few pounds on a better amp or sub (nice sounds don't have to skint you out)
