Rear Disk Brake Conversion Complete! - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #40666 12 posts Started by UTSlickVic
Well, just finished the rear drum to disk brake conversion last night. Found a the entire brake assemblies off a GT in the junkyard. They were pretty dirty when I first got them, but with a little time and care they turned out good as new.

So how do I rank the conversion? Well it took awhile but when you do one side the other side is easier (provided you dont strip any brake line bolts!!!!).

Do I feel a difference? Well I've only driven her once since yesterday, and I would have to say yes ther is a noticeable difference. But I would not go over board and say its 110 better.

Recommendations
Find the proper size wrench to take off the freaken brake lines!!!!!!!! Dont start the conversion until you do! I had a wrench the fit and worked on one side but did not on the other.

By the whole rear brake assemblies, if possible. It made it a very straight forward conversion.

Soke the bolts in WD40 before starting. It will help.

Use a "cheater bar" when unbolting. a.k.a "plummer's helper" I always keep one in my car.

After Thoughts
Some people say they have slack when they reconnect the ebrake cables. I did not and I dont think anyone else should. See pic of drum vs. disk. I think maybe people forget that the ebrake lines cross underneathe the car. I dunno just a thought.

Well here are some pics.

looks good.. what did you use to clean the rotors?

nice job !!
you should have taken a little time and paint the calipers since they were out anyways, but they look very clean.
congrats.
Did not clean the old rotors, bought new ones.... Brembo.

I did paint the calipers, just painted them black. I know very boring.

Thanks for the replys.
Congrats on the swap. Looking good
Nice work. I just finished mine up this morning so I know exactly what you went through...it's not too difficult; just takes some time.

do you notice a big difference in braking power now? or is it hardly noticable? Also, nice over axle exhuast.

Thanks, its a Greddy SP2. Well I drove it some more and I think there is a noticable difference in braking power. I would not say its drastically different. Maybe in a emergency braking situation then maybe one would definatly notice the difference in braking.

What are your thoughts Commer on the braking improvement Coomer? You may have a different take.
Do you need the parking brake wires from the gt ?

Also did you keep the same proportionnal valve in the front with the swap?

Thanks

Claude
It's been written on this site that you can modify the drum e-brake cables to work, but I would just get the whole rear disc setup if possible. It makes the whole conversion lots easier. Also, your current proportioning valve is fine.
I know this is an old post, but can you post the ebrake cable pics ...like where its located...
coomer if you see this can you post details about the swap you did on the yellicelli? i am parting out a 5th gen gts and i'm thinking about stealing the brakes off of it for my car. how'd to swap those? details are GREATLY appreciated! thanks
