How to disconnect the A/C? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #40426 8 posts Started by SpoonR530
Hey all,
Fall is just arownd the corner and I was thnking I would disconnect the a/c and try to free up some more of the little engine power i have with the 7afe. Is the best way just to take off the belt? Would It even be worth it? If any one has done it i would love some pointers.
thnx, SpooNr

No, it would not make even a bit of difference.
It worked in a 87 bmw 318 why wouldnt it make a difference in a celica, less stress on the engine ...?
are you wanting to take the compressor off and everything? or just "disconnect it". bc if you want to take the compressor off, you will be needing a new belt..also, it's just as fine to just not run the A/C when you want the "extra power"...

The 7afe is considered a underpowered engine, and if you remove the belt you won't notice any dramatic change in performance. Also, to ensure that your car's a/c system doesn't mess up you'll have to run your a/c at least once a month. So it would be pointless to keep putting your belt on and off every month just to make sure you a/c still works. And another thing, you'll still have to put another belt for your alternator.
When we did it in my friend beemer we took the whole thing out. I cant remmeber if we put in a new a belt or not. After, we could definitely feel the difference between when the A/C was OFF and when we took out the whole unit. Neways I could take out the comp but i was wonder if i could short cut that and get the same bennies. If not, I would love to hear from someone who has acctually done it. smile.gif

Your friend's Bimmer probably uses a different sort of A/C compressor. Ours use a clutch of some sort, so that the pulley pretty much spins freely when the A/C isn't turned on, meaning that the drag on the pulley and crankshaft from the A/C compressor when it's not on is very, very minimal.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't notice a difference, unless you actually removed the A/C components, and then, that difference would be because of weight reduction, not decreased drag on the motor.

New Toyota project coming soon...
Hm..... IC. I suppose ill just go with the pully and reduce the friction that way to the other accesories. Tnx for the advice all, and saving me a couple useless hours messin with the ac.
