GT front calipers on ST - Whats needed? - 6G Celicas Forums

I wanted to upgrade the front brakes of my ST to that off a GT. I got the calipers already but before i got the rotors i wanted to know if that would be all i needed, or if i would need to get the GT bracket as well. I Just wanted to make sure before i bought a set of slotted rotors. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

You will need the GT caliper bracket. Your ST lines will match up just fine.
pardon the OT question, whats the difference between the ST and GT calipers? i can get a set of GT calipers and brackets from the junkyard, theres a couple 5th and 6th gen celicas there.

basicly just the size. bigger brake sistem will help you to stop faster.
its hardly noticeable though, and should really only be done if you have to replace the calipers anyway for some reason

Completely agree, in my case, my front disks are starting to groove like a vinyl disk! biggrin.gif

just a larger diameter rotor? or is the caliper dual piston?

I don't think the caliper is dual piston I'm not sure but the caliper is a little bigger than the ST ones, so the brake pads cover a bigger area that's why the disc has a larger diameter
do you know how much of a size difference it is?

nop ! I have never messure any of them. but the difference performance wise won't be much either, as some said before, This is an upgrade that you should do if you NEED to change your calipers, don't do it looking for better braking response cause is not much of a difference and this difference gets even smaller if you have aftermarker rims.

Gt brakes are still single piston. The discs are slightly thicker, and about an inch larger (IIRC) than the ST stuff.
The piston and pad are cover roughly the same amount of area between the ST and GT. I'd say it's mostly a cosmetic modification. You'll probably get better braking performance from properly inflated tires...

so the gt guys should install the ST brake system to get the same braking power and weight reduction. I think your trying to say is.. this modification is not worth the time or the money, but if you have time and money... GO CRAzY!
if I HAVE TO CHANGE the calipers and rotors for some reason I would go with the GT ones but the idea of just spend money to change the ones that are working perfect so I can have a better looking, to me it's not worthy.

Off topic kinda but same subjet.. Just do a rear disc brake conversion. That should make for a noticable dif.

Also one not.. Do not get cheap or unknown brand cross drilled or sloted rotors... they suck.. I have already had my grinded down twice and need to do it again.
The hubs are the same for both the ST and GT models - no brackets needed to installed the GT calipers / rotors. I did the swap and I really didn't notice a difference. The rotors are slightly larger / thicker, so they may stay cooler in an auto-x senario.

The GT rotors are actually cheaper then the ST's for some reason, and I had a set of GT calipers lying around - so it was a no-brainer. If I had to pay for a set of calipers, I wouldn't have bothered.

The ST to GT rear brake conversion made difference and is definately worth it.

The 205 GT4 front brake conversion made a HUGE difference!

Why do people buy spoilers and lip kits and wheels? To look good. The worth of this mod is fine as a cosmetic thing, because it's cheap and easy to do. If weight reduction were a ture issue... then rotors are hardly the place to start cutting the fat... ;]
