Hi there everyone. Recently i have bought new 17inch rims for my celi and i use 225/45/R17 tyre. This weekend a mechanic told me that the tyres size it's not correct and that it's higher than normal. I 've been told that i should use 215/45 tyres otherwise the 225/45 tyre will cause many problems to the car!!! I really don't know what to do since the tyres are almost new and i don't want to replace them. I would appreciate any advise and any information from you guys......
What tyre size??? - 6G Celicas Forums
I have this table of recommended sizes:

however, better would be when you choose any tire and you will not sure, just count difference in comparison with stock tire... (I can handle this, so PM me if you will need more help)

I don't know exactly what was the stock tire. The car is an 1999 ssii so i guess it might was a 15inch tire. Do you know if the tires i have now may cause any problems to the car?

so that stock IMO was 205/55 R15. Only "problems" you shoud have are:
1. speedometer will show you incorrect speed because your 225/45 at 17'' are bigger (circumference +4,62 %) than 205/55 at 15''.
2. you may rub rear fender with 225 sometimes (of course depends on rim offset too... only ET 35 or less would do this).
3. fuel consumption will grow a bit (bigger "rolling resistance").
that's all...
conclusion:
1. if you don't care you will run 104 km/hr not 100 km/hr, stay calm
2. if you modyfy your rear fender like this:

you will not have any problems
3. how much that would be? 0,5 litre/100km? 1 litre? Not sure (you can't count that closely enough)... however IMHO it can't be more than 1 litre...

Malpaso thank you for the informations!
If these 3 problems will only occur i don't mind.
But what about the handling of the car? I 've also been told that it might damage my gearbox. Is the correct tire size 215/45/17? And does it matter if it's turbo or N/A?

Damage gearbox? I have never heard about this...
215/45/17 it's still not "by the book". 215/40/17 would be better (circumference -0,42 %), however 215/45/17 are bit closer (circumference +3,10 %) than 225/45/17 (circumference +4,62 %).

i have 215/45/17 since couple of years...no problem at all and love the wheel gap filling by the tire height
im also lowered 1.5''

Car is lowered not by the wheels but with lowering springs. Thats why wheels fill their space nicely.

I ran a 225/45/17 on a 7in wide rim with a +48 offset (tucked like a mofo). Front wheels turned totally in would rub the inner fender linner slightly (no big deal).
You can run 235/40/17 with a +35 offset and be lowered and still not rub the fender lips on 6th gens.

That's what I didn't understand
(bigger tire can't make car lower), however makes fill wheel space better (cuz is bigger
).
Thanks Tom, now that's clear

i am currently running 225/45/17 with a 35 offset, with eibach sportline springs (1.5" drop)
ive ran sets if 205/40, and 215/40's.
after running all 3, i would NEVER buy another tire size other than 225/45 on a 17" rim again.
the speedo diffrence is ~3mph. IMO well worth it for the diffrence in handleing, ride quality, traction, and looks. the last 3 pics in my profile are with the 225's.

Pressure 2 do you know if it matters whether the car is turbo or N/A? I 've been told that for a turbo car a 225/45 for 17inch is more suitable because of the increased torque and horsepower. For N/A engine the mechanic said that 215/45 is more suitable. The point is that i have beams engine with a few modifications so 225/45 would eventually be fine?? The rim is 17x8.

If I were you I would go with 215/40. Good compromise of looks and performance. There are two differences between 215 and 225: 225 looks more sporty and decreases acceleration. I have never seen problems with Celica's traction (FWD or AWD) even on 195 so 225 is exaduration if traction would be to drive the decision. And about sporty look - when I bought my GT I had 225s, looked kinda good but acceleration was hopeless. Switched to stock 205s - different story.

Well, actually the question is if horsepower and torque are material for the choice of tire profile? TomPoz i think 225/45 would be better for you if you have turbo on your car. Magic(with 1999 GT4) has these tires and he is completely satisfied. But if it's N/A then you are right, 215 it's the best choice!
I wish i knew it before
heheh

Nope, I will (hopefully, fingers crossed for doGGy) get GT4 and have 215 tyres. Some say that 205 are even better for AWD as it is easier to slide on these. It really does not matter if its turbo or non-turbo, grip is sufficient at 205.

not with 270+ft lbs of torque
besides the fact that its not so much the grip that made me go up in size..its RIDE QUALITY...here in the states, roads are bad, the 205's tend to pop quite easily.
the 215s were better, not quite as harsh, and helped stop the tire popping.
the 225s are as close to stock feeling ride quality ive had since i was stock.
