Hi there everyone. Recently i have bought new 17inch rims for my celi and i use 225/45/R17 tyre. This weekend a mechanic told me that the tyres size it's not correct and that it's higher than normal. I 've been told that i should use 215/45 tyres otherwise the 225/45 tyre will cause many problems to the car!!! I really don't know what to do since the tyres are almost new and i don't want to replace them. I would appreciate any advise and any information from you guys......

Damage gearbox? I have never heard about this...
215/45/17 it's still not "by the book". 215/40/17 would be better (circumference -0,42 %), however 215/45/17 are bit closer (circumference +3,10 %) than 225/45/17 (circumference +4,62 %).

Damage gearbox? I have never heard about this...

I ran a 225/45/17 on a 7in wide rim with a +48 offset (tucked like a mofo). Front wheels turned totally in would rub the inner fender linner slightly (no big deal).
You can run 235/40/17 with a +35 offset and be lowered and still not rub the fender lips on 6th gens.

I have 235/40/17, on 17x8 rims with a +35 offet on my lowered celica and i love it

ive ran sets if 205/40, and 215/40's.
after running all 3, i would NEVER buy another tire size other than 225/45 on a 17" rim again.
the speedo diffrence is ~3mph. IMO well worth it for the diffrence in handleing, ride quality, traction, and looks. the last 3 pics in my profile are with the 225's.

If I were you I would go with 215/40. Good compromise of looks and performance. There are two differences between 215 and 225: 225 looks more sporty and decreases acceleration. I have never seen problems with Celica's traction (FWD or AWD) even on 195 so 225 is exaduration if traction would be to drive the decision. And about sporty look - when I bought my GT I had 225s, looked kinda good but acceleration was hopeless. Switched to stock 205s - different story.

Well, actually the question is if horsepower and torque are material for the choice of tire profile? TomPoz i think 225/45 would be better for you if you have turbo on your car. Magic(with 1999 GT4) has these tires and he is completely satisfied. But if it's N/A then you are right, 215 it's the best choice! I wish i knew it before

besides the fact that its not so much the grip that made me go up in size..its RIDE QUALITY...here in the states, roads are bad, the 205's tend to pop quite easily.
the 215s were better, not quite as harsh, and helped stop the tire popping.
the 225s are as close to stock feeling ride quality ive had since i was stock.
