I wanna get a wiring kit off ebay (please tell me if thats a bad idea..)

Anyways, what's the difference between the different gauges of wire. As the gauges increase does it mean the wire is better?

Also, some of the wiring kits a found are 300 watts, 1000 watts, etc. .. does this wattage have to be the wattage my amp puts out at 1ohm ? (i was just trying to figure this out so don't make fun if im totally off please..lol)
