new engine - 6G Celicas Forums

hey guys, my celica is getting a new motor at the time, but the place doing the work said they wanted to know which extra parts we want to replace, which would be quite an overestimate at the time. does anyone else see any of these parts to be way off estimate in price. clutch kit, 279. lower and upper radiator hose, 45 a piece. reseal kit, 355. timing belt, 244. waterpump, 170. ignition wires, 140. distributor cap and rotar, 95. carb gasket, 30. breather hose, 174. transmission seal, 110. temp-sending unit 75. oil sending, 80.... those are the extras that they want us to include. there is something else weird that says sub-replaced used engine with 2.0? im not sure what they are putting in my car, but we were quoted 2200 when starting and now they want 4500 for everything said and done. somehow this is very strange and seeming like its going to cost a lot more than quoted, what do you guys think about some of the prices they quote for the parts.
a 5sfe or 3sgte? or what?

and yeah. i was quoted 1900 for my engine rebuild and it ended up being 3200. fkcers.

Timing belt is like $40. Breather hose, that should be like $5. Tranny seal is about $8. Stock clutch kit is around $150. Reseal kit, unless that includes the head gasket, should be like $200 at most. Is the water pump a brand new one from Toyota? Those are just the ones I know off the top of my head. Buyer beware!

i got my engine fully rebuilt on my 7afe for cheap >$500 w/ a 12month or 12k mile warranty by a company called the The Perfect Engine... granted i had to pull the old one out so they could pick it up, take it away, do their stuff, and ship it back to me, which only took two days from when i took it out, but i live in cali.. and then i had to put the rebuilt one back in took like half day with some help.. i thought it was a good deal.. don't know about shipping to wisconsin though
just keep looking around and find a place w/ someone easy to talk to who wants your business and will work w/ you

yea guys idk what they are really doing so im going to call them tomorrow and ask them about what they are actually doing cause this deal is sounding super shady right now. ill take into consideration the amounts you guys posted cause ya some of them sound way off. hopefully i can get out of this with an engine with 3 grand or less cause they want way more than originally quoted and i think its bs for what they want.
ya guys i got an update with whats going on. it appears that the long block they have is a 2.0 liter and will fit no problem with parts from the old engine. talking to the mechanic, which was a nice guy btw, said that it has no problems mounting and that you cant tell the difference between the way the old and new engines look. I asked if he had an engine code only to find out that he didnt, so i was dissappointed right there and then. they said that the all the parts they use are from napa and that they are higher quality than most dealerships, which is probably not true. anyway he said that bare minimum I would have to get reseal kit so the engine doesnt leak oil lol. a new timing belt, clutch, tranny seal and the water pump. they have 3 yr warrenty on the engine but its pretty much bs cause if i fix something that is easy to obtain they want an arm and a leg for a part. im not sure what to do at this point cause me and my parents are like 3/4 1/4(me) as far as paying for this so either i suck it up and pay the 4500 they want to fix everything or tell them that i can replace this, and that and that and some other things to get the car running again. for 4500 i could of had someone hear put a 3's in for me and i could be really happy customer. hopefully i can get deeper into this and find some agreement for these money haglers.
You could pick up a decent, used mileage 5SFE out of a Camry or Celica GT for around $400, have it dropped in for like $800, and be a lot better off. For $4500, you would be most of the way into a 3SGTE swap.

LoL! Jen, it's 1900 for the rebuild and the rest for labor for taking it out and puting the engine back into your car. And that's pretty high for a rebuilt. I got a quote of 2600 for rebuilt including forged pistons, polishing, etc. and that included the labor. But I dont think rebuilding 7AFE is worth it unless I really have to do it (turbocharge baby!). But yeah, you could get a nice mileage 5SFE for around 400-600 and its like 600 for install labor.

DO NOT use the 2.0 motor.
that would be a 3sfe. with even lower quality parts in the bottom end than the 5s.
id pull the motor outta that shop.
take the 3 k you were planning on spending,
buy 5-600 worth of tools (including an engine lift)
buy a used newer (97+ celica or camry) 5sfe for around 6-800
and do the swap yourself with the help of some local friends and hopfully 6gc members!

i was told by my uncle who is a jag mechanic that using the 2.0L engine which i would beleive to be the 3sfe as well, that the engine management system wouldnt work anyway cause of the displacement. so unless they reprogrammed the ecu wouldnt the engine just not work because the fuel injection system would be way off and the compression would be lower than factory? also wouldnt i lose torque and horsepower by using a smaller displacement on the engine as well? than the 5sfe in there. We plan on telling them to screw themselves and tell them to get me a 2.2L and put that back in the car. We have to get a clutch put in there and then everything else done to the car will be by people who we trust and wont charge us an arm and a leg for all the extra crap that we can get for cheaper. i would do it myself right now but i dont really have many people to help me and my parents dont really like the speed at which my uncle works(which is pretty slow) plus im moving to a new house for college with summer school thrown in there making it hard to work on the car many hours of the day. ill be sure to keep ya guys updated because i plan on keeping my celica around for a long time. smile.gif
If I was you I would tell the shop to put the car back the way you rolled it in there and start looking up a different mechanic. Plus if they go over the quoted amount you are suposed to ok all amounts over that.
Hey guys i finally got my car back with the new engine and clutch installed. they said to get oil change in 500< miles and make sure there is no oil is leaking or coolant across the next few weeks. im babying the car like they said for about first 1000 miles to break the engine in. all in all i happy with the decision and it ended up being about 3k after all was said and done(breather hose cost 170 lol what a ripoff). little pricey but to keep the celica for at least another 3 years while still in school is fine by me. now i got to work on the body which needs some major touching up so hopefully when this summer class is over i can get some work done it and make it back to stock. thanks for all the input though guys, cause without ya i would be spending way more than necessary. 6gc for life
Cool.

Be sure to give it plenty of full throttle, but keep the RPMs low, like under 3500 for now. Using full throttle will help the rings to seat better.

thanks for the info tweak. this may sound dumb but what are you referring to when you say full throttle?
Pedal to the metal. Floor it. Stomp on it. Push the pedal all the way on the right until it stops. MAT IT!
