Progressive vs. Straight Rate Springs? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #37487 2 posts Started by hellsyphon
I was wondering which spring would be the best type of spring.
All I know is the following:

Progressive= spring rate is variable as the spring is compressed aka the spring rate is usually softer in the beginning but as it is compressed more and more the spring rate goes up. The advantage of progressive springs are that they give a softer "stock-like" ride, but are more expensive to manufacture and not as predictable when being loaded up going through corners?

Straight= The same spring rate as the spring is compressed. The advantage of these springs are they are cheaper and since they compress at the same rate they would be more predictable? but the spring rates can either be too stiff or soft.

I'm confused about which is the better "all purpose" spring. Any thoughts or imput would be greatly appreciated smile.gif
IMO a progressive rate spring is better for your average daily driver.
the thought being that when your cruising, taking corners easily, the spring rate is softer, which will be a more comfortable ride, and when you drive aggressivly, the spring rate goes up, and the car is "stiffer" and has a tighter feel.

with a normal "straight rate" spring, you have only one, or the other.
