I've serached this forum but can't seem to find any main topic about whether a stock 2nd gen 3sgte needs a turbo timer.
Anyone know if it is really necessary?
I don't have one right now so i always let the engine run b4 i turn it off to let cool down for a couple of minutes.
Do i really have to do this? or does the 2nd gen have some device to let the oil flow round for a little while

you dont need one. what you are doing now is fine.

i just let my car idle while i go open the garage door and put it away for the night. if im just running into a store, i just shut it off and dont worry about it.

i dont think any of the mr2 or alltrac guys ever reported any type of issues from not using one.

This is especially true if your turbo is water cooled. If you don't have a water cooled turbo, a turbo timer or proper idle down time is important after boosting.

yup, all the turbo needs according to toyota is 20 seconds of cool down time after a hard run...they call it "towing" LMAO...like people actually tow stuff with the alltrac..ohh wait..chrisD does... he tows his STARLET!LMAO LMAO

Because they annoy most people who want to just turn their car off. Aside from that, if your turbo is watercooled, a cool down period is not really needed - at least not as much.

Needing a turbo timer or not has nothing to do with what kind of intercooler your car has. It has to do with how your turbo itself (the big iron and aluminum thingy that looks like a snail ) is cooled by water and oil (3s-gte, most newer turbo cars) or just oil (older turbo cars, most aftermarket turbo cars). The addition of the water keeps the bearings and oil inside the turbo at a low enough temperature to keep the oil from turning to carbon inside the housing after the turbo stops spinning and the oil stops flowing.

Stock cars probably do not come with turbo timers because it is a big security/safety issue. You can't park your car in gear (manual transmission), you can only use your parking brake - and there is a chance the car can be driven when the key is out of the ignition... which is very bad. I'm pretty sure turbo timers are even illegal in most states - so don't let the cops see you have one!

well..my 3sgte is air cooled, i replaced the stock intercooler with a bigger front mounted one. So if i park it fro the night i should let it cool for a bit? and if i go to the store and park there i can just shut it off immediately?

the cool down period necessary is dependent on the how long and hard you have been boosting - not the time of day or purpose of the trip.

basic idea is....yes.

if u do some hard runs. let it cool down for a while before turning it off. if your just daily driving, dont worry about it.

the turbo is water cooled. we are talking about the coolant lines that go to your turbo, not your intercooler.
