I've just had the head gasket replaced on my 5sfe but now the engine is noisy in idle and the revs vary from 1600-2000rpm! It's too high and I've gotta take it back, but it would be good to know what the rpms are supposed to be on the 5sfe in neutral. Can anyone help?

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Check all your pipework on the inlet manifold.

I would say that any car when idling without a choke on should be around the 800-1000rpm mark.
My GT is currently idling between 700-800, but at 700 it judders like it wants to stall. Needs a service though.

thanks for that vsboy. after a couple of days it just started returning to normal idle rpms. at the moment in the mornings it starts off on around 1100 then eases off into 800. it sounds normal. i think it just needed some driving to settle or something
that sounds about right, myne does the same thing idles for 1100 for about 2 mins and then eases off to 700-800rpm don't know if my airfilter makes a difference though, its bloody hell loud hehe like a vacuum on drugs -R

it's normal dude....the car is suppose to idle high when you first start it, the computer is set this way to warm up the engine, and when it finally warms up a bit, it'll slowly drop the rpms, its normal.....does it more often when you start it in the cold (in the morning, winter, etc etc) come up here in the midwest, all you southern boys will probably be covered in 10 layers of clothes or something

Not at 1600 - 2000rpm though

^well....maybe not everytime, but i remember one day it was freezing cold, probably below Zero or something, and my car went all the way to 1800-1900, then went back to 800 when it warmed up, right now since it's a lil warmer, it goes to about 1500-1600 for about a minute or so and slowly goes down, feels normal to me......But, it is not a bad idea to check for vaccum leak and the inlet manifold like GT4 has stated
