Spark Plugs - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #36021 21 posts Started by WALKER
I tried doing a search for what spark plugs people have used and have had good success with in their cars. Please let me know what type of spark plugs you are using and if they are good or bad and what experiences you have had with them if any. Also if you wouldn't mind saying what type of engine you have it installed on. Right now I have the 5SFE engine but am eventually wanting to go to a 3SGTE, any need to have different plugs for the two engine types?

stock denso or ngk plugs are your best bet for the 5s/3s (at stock boost levels)/ 7a
when you up the boost on the 3s, most guys go with a 1 step colder plug.

Can you order the NGK's pregapped? What is the proper gap for the spark plugs?

Just looked on the NGK catalogue and it has the gap defined as 0.044, part number BKR6EIX-11 (Iridium IX). Does that gap sound correct?

i have very good luck with boush platinum +4's. Other than the CAI, my engine is stock

The most important lesson I learned from Karate-Dô Kyôshan–“You can not be what you do not believe you are”
Playr - Thanks for your post, you also answered my next question about the proper torque to tighten them with.

for the beams engine what do you suggest guys?

Check Playr's post again wink.gif
i would have to agree with spunky, my bosch platinum +4's have treated me pretty well

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed?
I agree, Bosch +4's are doing well for me, too. I've had them in my car for almost 1.5 years and checked them for fouling three weeks ago. They were unbelievably clean and I still get good response and gas milage.

So far I have not found anything better than the NGK Irridiums. Denso (stock plugs, wires etc) and NGK are the same company so going with stock and the upgrade in metals seems to make the most sense to me.
I had the Bosch Platinum +4's on my old 3s-GTE swapped 4th gen but a mechanic told me they were causing problems with my pistons (I think he said they were burning the tops of the pistons or something).
Bosch* +4s are engineered for euro cars, why would you put em into a jap import?? I have NGK irridiums in mine, runs pretty good.

Not trying to hijack but I have a question

Alright I plan on running between a 35 and 50 shot of nitrous for a little fun this summer and wanted to do things as safely as possible. I've read up and people have been saying that NGK plugs are good for nitrous from my understanding and that you're supposed to run a step or two colder so the spark doesn't blow. Can somebody help me find what plug I should get or point me in the right direction. I know I’m a noob but want to do it as safely as possible.

then 1 step colder you want
BKR7E
2 steps
BKR8E
Spark plugs are just a matter of psychology matters: this works better, that one works better, this has iridium tips and that one has platnium tips.

Either way you look at it, its all taste and preference and for a 7afe engine I would just stick to the cheap $1-2 spark plugs, cause it wont do you any better to run Irdium Plugs that cost $5-8.
Spark plugs do not make you gain any more HP than wat came stock on your engine, unless of course you didn't gap it right, it does lag like crap.

Unless u have a high performance engine, tick with cheapo!

this is kinda of a dumb statement....

the heat range on which you're selecting has an effect on what your motor runs like as well as a proper gap...

iridiums will work well on a naturally aspirated car but on a forced feed car...now thats a different story
i think import tuner or someone came out with a rather large spread on spark plug information...

but its not "psychology" there is a proper way to do spark plugs...

One more question that I am going to throw out there in regards to the 1 step colder plug (ie. BKR7E vs. BKR6E). It was mentioned that when going with the 3S engine some go one step colder, also now been brought up with regards to nitrous application.

Is there a negative side to going with a BKR6E on a 5S engine? Not that I am planning on doing that, just curious to find out what possible problems (if any) you could run into if you went with 1 or 2 steps colder than recommended.

GT4WRC.COM
you don't want to go colder then recommended

the rule of thumb is for every extra 50 HP added go 1 step colder...

no extra power no colder plug
