Painting window trim - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #35562 38 posts Started by snapshotgt
Okay, so my trim around my windows were getting faded, and ugly looking…especially against my few month old paint job.

here is a “how-to” for refreshing them, and making them look like new!

1.) Go to a hardware store and buy the fallowing items:
- black spray paint for plastic (it is rubber your spraying)
- a roll of 2 inch blue painters tape
- some painters plastic/drape

2.) Prep your car. This is the most time consuming step, you want to do it carefully
so it looks really good…and no over sprays etc…

3.) Wipe down the trim so it is totally clean
4.) Spray away! make sure to read the directions for this…about how fdar to hold the can away etc.
5.) Another coat once it is all dry (it is best to make them to “light” coats
6.) Take all plastic and tape away VERY carefully once 2nd. coat is dry on the surface
7.) Clean up and view your sizzleing hawt trim!

here are some pictures:

I used "plastic" spray paint....it was what i thought would bond best with rubber.

I used an oil paint black marker for touch up. I might like to go and do that all over some time. Nice effort.

question for the vert guys... that black trim that goes around the windows and then where the one back brake light is... that goes the whole way around the car (does anyone get what i'm talking about), could i do this same thing to that?

how much?
looks good,

my opinion: with the time spend on masking the car wouldn't it be easier to remove the trim. you get to spray the entire trim and you get an all around paint bond so chips and cracks won't happen due the weathering.

the one for the front windshield is about 30 bucks + shipping the strips on the doors gonna cost ya around 60 bucks each for both sides. Its a good buy if you have a few dollars laying around its wel worth it. its one of those small things that covers up the truth about how old our cars really are. heck everyone who stops me and ask me about my celi always thinks its a 2001

I just had this done to my car. I had it in the shop for a good while and asked if they would do this for me. I donno how much they charged, but I got a really good deal. For 1000, they painted my car 3l2 paint code (different color red than what I had on it), molded on the body kit (alot of work too), installed blinkers (clears), removed all badges except the Toyota logo (the "T") on the front and back, and installed new mesh.
Nice work Snap smile.gif

The guy before us said he had a place repaint the black piece that goes around behind near the convertible top, the one where the brake light is. They just taped it off and threw some black paint on there, so i guess it is possible.

Maybe we could expand on this in making it a how-to. Like we could add a how to remove and replace it, or how to just paint it. Because, adding just a painting trim how-to is a pretty simple concept id hope everyone on here was capable of figuring out. Nice job either way Snap, it looks really good.

I am now a part of the ihavemorethen16gc club!
Now it is truly MINT CONDITION!!!!!!!!!!

sorry.. I had to tongue.gif

Good write-up, now whenever I feel the need to do more than the standard wash and wax maybe I will do this.
