well after getting hit and run my idea for the beams motor went down the drain, i figred while its in the shop i might as wel get it swapped w/ the 4age 20 valve silvertop, anyways my question is how much do these swaps tend to run? and where can i find a 4age silvertop engine?oh yeah and time is a problem too the swap cant any longer than a couple of weeks.I basically just want to know whatt i would need?(clip or engine better?dont see the point in the clip since its a celica not a corolla) for the swap and what all neeeds to be done.i loooked around but couldnt seem to find anything:( anyways thanks in advance

This should probably be in the Engine/Transmission/Maintainence forum.
Anyways, your best bet is to get a clip. Forget about the body panels, most won't come with them and if they do you will end up paying more for it. With a clip you are getting exactly what you need, and sometimes extra aftermarket parts. If you were to get a motor set, you might not get certain parts to make your swap more complete (like the exhaust down pipe with the flex section) Other than the engine, you will need the Air Flow Meter, Ignitor & Coil, and complete wiring harness with ECU.
The prices of the motors range from $350-1000, with the clips from $1500-2000 (they are everywhere on Ebay). Just be sure to check what all comes with what you purchase. It might be easier for you to purchase a clip and do a basic swap or just get a motor and run a stand-alone engine management system. Its really what you can afford that will determine what you get.
www.club4ag.com is a great source of info.
I imagine you could get everything done quickly provided you can do the wiring or pay someone to do it for you fast, and get all your parts together ahead of time. Although it will probably take longer than what your timeframe will allow.
If you have any questions, send me a PM and I will help you as best I can. Good luck.

I on the other hand think this swap is common enough amougst the Corolla folk that you don't *need* to buy a clip... but it's nice to have one. The coil and ignitor can be sourced from different cars... along with all of the needed plugs for wiring. The only real parts you need, is the engine itself with neccesary attachments (dizzy, manifolds, etc)... and the ecu.

yeah this is what i was hoping, i can probably have more time like maybe a few more weeks but it is my daily driver so i cant have it being out more than month, and as for the 7age route, i looked into that and i kind of wasent feeling it, ym current motor was swapped in w/ 80k and now i have no idea how much it has..more than likely around 85-87, but thanks for all your help
what are common problems with running this setup? i read that i could use my stock st tranny w/ the 4a-ge, this is true right? but yeah liek i said before thnaks

Yeah the silvertop swap in the Celica ST isn't bad at all, there's a few out there, I know because I did the wiring harnesses for them
Anyway, yes, you can use the stock 7A tranny. The blacktop is not really easier or harder to swap, but it's newer and more expensive... and more powerful.

what kind of power do the silver and black top swaps make?

Silvertop has 160HP and Blacktop has 180 I think.

Silvertops are rated at 160 and blacktops 165. But the silvertop tends to be over-rated when it comes to horsepower figures.

are those stock engine numbers or average post-swap numbers?

I think the silvertops see around 130 whp.
Typically that swap into a Celica, including labor, costs around $4000 or so.

nm, whp. i didnt read! thats not to bad then considering a stock 7afe makes about 110-115 hp at the crank. i'd be happy to see 85 at the wheels with my auto and stock motor.

For what it's worth, I've acutally heard people complain after doing this swap. The engine makes more power in top end, but not for "normal" driving. Both engines make good power for what they are, but they're act very different, so make shure you're getting the one that matches your driving style.
The 4a-ge is a de-stroked version of our 7afe (1.6L vs our 1.8L), so they're noticibly less powerful in the low - mid range RPM (where we do MOST of our driving). The 4age has a VVT head, which is why it makes more HP, but it's at a much higher RPM. The end result being a car that will accellerate better once it reaches it's high RPM powerband, but feel less powerful during normal driving.
There's a 3rd option - a supercharged version of the 4age (forget the name) which makes much better power early on.
Just thought you should be aware before acutally doing your swap.

you mean the 4agze. anywho... yeah, you have to rev higher to feel the torque with a 4age. but i don't think it accelerates slower than the 7afe in the lower rpm. i haven't heard anyone complain after replacing their 110 hp engine with a 160 hp one.
ss-iii splitters and 404 skirts areon. which means i need to update my sig.
>
Yeah, the 4agze was the supercharged one - thanks!
I've read the "complaints" on a 4age forrum (something like club4age.com?). Most those guys were interested in speed and racing, so they gladly gave up "daily driving" feel for MUCH better acceleration. I probably should have been more clear - I think the 4age swap sounds great - I've even considered it myself (I have a ST, so would be an easy swap) for when my 1.8L gives out
Just wanted to throw out there that it does act different than our ST motor.
You could put the 4age head on your 7afe block and have the best of both worlds. Probably as powerful as you can get with a natrually aspired 1.8L

Yeah it's true, I've done quite a few silvertop swaps, just finished one yesterday and took it for a ride. It's an auto and I was comparing it against my '94 Celica ST auto. There's definetly a lack of torque at the bottom end of the range, but once you're past 3000 rpm it's no comparison. When you first step on the gas from a total stop, 0-20 is like, hmmm, Where's The Torque??? But then you get past 20mph and it just screams up past 60 and you'll like, wooooaaaaahhhh.....

Not worth it
If you're doing all that trouble, go for a 3SGTE.
Heytalktoryan, you can use the stock ST tranny, you just need a flywheel from a regular 4AGE and then it will fit. You're going to want a full engine set (engine, ecu, wiring harness, sensors and ignition) at the very least, if you're doing it yourself then I'd say yeah, get a clip.

The only thing u need to replace to fit that motor in you ST is to replace the old motor mounts on the 7A and put it all on the 4A. From there its drag, and drop.
>
I'm not sure about that, the 2ZZ-GE, a 1.8, puts out 180 HP, the "magic" 100HP/liter. But a 7A-GE is definately more powerful, but in no way is it a bolt on job. Nik is doing a 7A-GTE.
