ngk iridium ix - 6G Celicas Forums

So maybe this is a stupid question, but, iridium isn't platinum, is it? i'm reading all over the place that iridium is BETTER than platinum, but is not platinum. so if the 5sfe requires platinum plugs, would iridiums be bad? also, is there a difference between iridium, and iridium ix?
I didn't think the 5sfe required the platinum plugs. From what I've heard, the platinum wears off after a little bit and makes the car run worse. But don't quote me on that.

stock plugs (at least for the 3sgte) are platinum. They generally last a pretty long time - much longer than standard copper plugs. Iridium are much more expensive but last a VERY long time. Iridium are as good as copper at conducting but last longer. The down side to iridium is that the tips are brittle and can break - particularly with higher horsepower applications. In a stock application, a set of iridiums would probably last you the life of your car. Platinum is almost as good at conducting as copper and iridium but not quite. These are all generalities.

QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.
i have had the iridium IX in my GT for about 1 and a half years(10,000) and havent failed, although I plan to change them soon out of boredom:P.....they respond great though, u wont be dissapointed with NGK;)
I just put a set of ngk iridium ix'es in they work great. I dont see why it would require platnum. I dont know the diff with the ix's but I dont think ngk makes just iridium, only iridium ix (could be rong though)
