on the ct26, do you have to run both the oil and coolant lines to cool the turbo, or can you just use Oil?

yes, you must run the coolant lines also.

Not really, you can just rin the oil line without the water lines but i am sure the turbo will not last as long as it would with the water lines helping to cool it down. Why would you want to run without the water lines?

There are many aftermarket turbos that do not use water cooled technology. As long as you use a turbo timer and at least 2 minutes after hard runs, you shouldn't have that big of a problem. I don't know of any reason that the ct-26 needs water cooled any more than these other turbos. That said, I wouldn't own a turbo without it being water cooled....unless it was a porsche (which only recently went to water cooled turbos)....

the ct-26 is a WATER cooled turbo.
that means its cooled by water, not oil.
the only job oil has inside that turbo is to lubricate.
without the water to help cool it, you WILL cook it.
the aftermarket turbos your talking about jay are designed to have ALOT more oil flow going thru them, where the oil acts as both a lubricant, and a coolant.

Before I respond to this, I want to EMPHASIZE that I do NOT recommend running the ct-26 without water lines. I researched this question recently because I had a massive water leak at the coolant lines to my turbo and couldn't get it fixed right away. I looked on the mr2 board and other import boards as well. There is considerable disagreement on this point by the experts. However, after doing alot of reading, I came to the conclusion that proper cool down and running synthetic oil would likely keep the turbo safe at least in the short term. There are some very smart people with MUCH more experience than me that disagree with this but there are alot of others on the other side too. I am just giving my opinion based on the research that I did. Again, I believe that water cooled turbos will, all else being equal, last longer. Here are a couple threads:

dont be cheap, hook up the water line also. toyota put it there for a reason. i think thats the point we should be trying to make to the original poster.

Excellent point. But saying the turbo wouldn't last a day is simply not true. I am all about giving correct advice but exaggerating is generally not wise. Its like when your parents tell you that you will end up a drug addict if you try marajuana. Such statements tend to be counterproductive because kids learn that the warnings were greatly exaggerated and then are less likely to heed important advice in the future.

jay, i dont think i was exagerating at all.
IMO the turbo in question wont last without being water cooled.
weather its a week, a day or a month, or 5 yrs, i think we'll all agree that toyota designed the turbo with water cooling in there for a reason, and it stands to reason that the longevity of the turbo will be greatly comprimized without it.
