Spacers for short shifters - 6G Celicas Forums

The TWM kit pictured on there web site does not show the spacers to raise the whole unit up even in their instructions. I've searched the forums and have been reading about the 7th gen SS instalation and noticed all of those included spacers. How does TWM accomplish this? Is it only the 7th gen shifter that requires this mod, are they that different? I have emailed TWM asking them if the shifter it's self is actually different, I'm curious to hear what they say.

The reason I ask is that we have a local (formor) TWM dealer who has 5th gen kits and 7th gen kits for a really decent price but sadly no 6th gen kits at all. He was reluctant to sell me a 7th gen shifter, probably cause he thinks I'll just try to return it if it doesn't fit. I'm sure if an e-bay 7th gen shifter fits then a TWM one will, I was just currious why it uses spacers and the 6th gen specific doesn't?
you mean the bushings to support to WHOLE unit?

yeah, it's easy enough to do with washers. I was more asking why one kit needs them and the other doesn't, are they that different?

I don't think TRD uses them seeing as the whole unit is replaced. TWM uses it to raise the whole unit so they can make the lower section of the shifter longer
yes the whole unit is replaced for TRD but they also supplied metal bushings just like that.
My TWM kit did not come with spacers, as they are not needed when installing the TWM shifter. (6th gen one)
eh, try it but i doubt that you dnnt need em because the main diff in the ss is that there is less throw on the top thus more on the bottum, you need the extra hight or it will scrape the base.

mine looks exactly like that pic with the purple spacers, washers will do just fine, its about a 1/2 lift. home depot sells plastic spaces that would work better and easyer though.
TWM doesn't come with them because you use the stock shifter base, whereas the TRD comes with a new one. All TWM does is swap out the shifter.

I wasn't trying to compair TWM and TRD I was awair of those differences befor this site exsited and we were posting on celica.net and only had one forum.

my question refered to the differences between 6-7th gen TWM shifters, and if the design of the shaft it's self was different. I talked with Kevin from TWM and he confirmed that thay are infact different, he was under the immpression that the 7th gen shifter wouldn't fit quite right. But I think however it's would fit as well any of the other 7th gen shifters that some of our members are currently useing.

That was the answer I was searching for, thanx for the help
mine be a 7th gen shifter. works perfect install was all most painless (no install is ever truely painless)

those are from the 7th gen SS kit. Yes the 6th gen TWM & 7th gen SS are different, but thet are very similar. The spacers are included in the 7th gen kit (mine were) and I would say they are nessessary. No probs here with mine.

ok, so which shifter would everyone prefer? TWM or TRD? Or are they both about the same in shifting wise. (sorry to switch topic just curious)

an evo/lancer, cost $28 and three hours of total work. and came with a shift knob.
^ If you want something that is acutally made for our cars, then it really just comes down to what you are looking to get out of it.

I went with TRD, because

1) it was a hell of a deal
2) I hated the stock shifter

If you want a short shifter then go with TWM, but if you want to retain slightly shorter than stock height then go with TRD.

If you want something that's designed for true performance go with TRD, the height has nothing to do with shifter performance.

well while we are on the topic of short shifters im having real trouble installing mine, ive used the tutorial on this site to remove the assembly but i CANNOT for my life figure out how to move the level out the assembly. my only problem is getting out the mddle of the shifter. i cant get that second ball out and i really dont want to break anything
