I was just thinking about how I used to have and buy mostly Chevys then bought a 91 Geo Prizm.
I learned about the dependablity of the 7a and other Toyotas. I think other people have been converted this way.

I for one... didn't know geo use toyota engines lol. and i always thought they were some crap that looks like civics and runs like a KIA

Geo's are all muts. The Tracker (I think 4 and 6 cylinders) and Metro (at least the 4 cylinder) use Sizuki motors, and the Prizum uses both a Toyota motor and an Isuzu motor. The Storms (my favorite), use a 1.6 liter that I think may be Toyota, and the 1.8 Isuzu motor.

Yeah, most people also think that the only Geo ever made was the Metro. That's what poeple always think when I talk about my old Geo Storm. The Geo Storm GSi was a hot little car. Lotus went in on making the suspension on them too.

Just to be clear, the Prizm not only uses a Toyota engine, it IS a Toyota. It's a 100% Toyota Corolla built alongside the Corolla in the same facility (NUMMI), the only differences are the badges and some body panels to give it a slightly different look. (Maybe the taillights too).

I don't know about same factory, but I know the Isuzu Impulse, Geo Storm, and Asuna Sunfire share almost all the same parts. Differences are in headlights and taillights.

I just want to add about the Isuzu Impulse, I can't believe that thing isn't more popular. I think it's because they didn't make very many. In 1987-89, it came in RWD format with the 1.8 turbo and a limitted slip rearend. Then in 1990, it went to AWD format with the 155hp 1.8 turbo. Limited numbers is the only reason I see these things not being popular.

It's an Isuzu... that's why. Ever tried to diagnose problems with those things? That's another reason.

It's an Isuzu... that's why. Ever tried to diagnose problems with those things? That's another reason.

Mine really wasn't that bad. It was harder to work on than the Celica just cause it seemed like they put no thought into the position of things on the motor, you couldn't reach things. You can't say they weren't reliable. Mine was 200k when I got rid of it, and I ran the crap out of that car. What is so bad about it just being Isuzu?

There is a nice looking impulse in town. Its a deep red, gunmetal wheels, exhaust, and its whatever year they stopped the pop-up lights. Its nice, but its a box.

i bet the geo is a light car too. swaping a 3s into it would make it a nice sleeper. but i bet there is very little room in the bay for things

There is a 4 cylinder turbo motor you can swap into the Metro. It comes out of a Euro Swift. It may be the same 1.3 turbo motor that's in the Starlet. For the Storm, there's the 1.8 liter turbo, and if you search for Isuzu in streetfire, there's a video of I-Mark running an 11.3 with that motor. The I-Mark is what I got my rear disks from. It had a 4-2-1 header design from the factory, like the 3sge manifold. The Storm's didn't have that though. But you can buy a nice header from pacesetter for it. I've thought about buying a Metro and putting the turbo motor in it. You get 200, even 150 hp in that thing and you will be flying.

If I recall correctly, you're thinking of the Swift's 1.6 engine, which is NOT a turbo. It makes about 100hp. However, the internals are ALL forged making it very strong, and it can be turbocharged in stock form. I think there's even a kit for it. This is based on a bunch of research I did some years back.

Now that I think of it, there may be an older version, like a mid-80s, that does have a turbo. It's not the 4EFTE though.

There is the older RWD Isuzu Impulse which did have a 2 liter turbo 4 banger, but it is NOT the same thing as the Geo Storm. The Geo Storm is the same as the later Isuzu Impulse, which changed to FWD in the 90's... but the Isuzu version (90-92 Impulse I think) are VERY rare, especially the AWD turbo one... regardless... I've come across two turbo Impulses (old RWD ones) and both had tranny issues and turbo issues. The AWD turbo one doesn't have the old 2.0... instead it had a different 1.6 and both the 2.0 and 1.6 had small turbos.

As for the swift... the Swift is a Suzuki. It's the same things as the geo metro and I believe came with a standard 3 cylinder and an optional 4 banger.

The 2nd gen prizm is smaller but not that much smaller. I own one. An option on the 2nd gen Prizm LSI is the 7A-FE engine, its an upgrade from the base 1.6L 4A-FE. I know this because when I go to get oil filers it asks me if I have a 4A-FE or a 7A-FE I would assume then that you can do any 4A engine swaps with no more difficulty than an ST. Maybe even enough room for a 3S?


Yes it is true that Prizms are about 95% the same mechanical parts as a Corolla and come off the very same assembly line. Over half of the parts in my car have toyota stamped on them, and Ive used many replacement corolla parts. They are typically 1000 dollars less sale price than an identical Corolla of the same year, condition and mileage, and they use the same oil filter as my GT as well.

Wow, I think your wrong. I never thought I'd correct you. The 90-93 Impulses came with 1.8 turbo RS with AWD, and the non turbo 1.8 litter. The turbo was rated at 155 hp, the non was 135. The 90-93 Geo Storm came with the 1.8 non turbo motor, and the 1.6 non turbo. So it was a small turbo. My non turbo was just fine for speed. And the transmision on it was great. Shifted a lot smoother than the Celica and felt like it would take a lot of abuse. Just minor things, but I wouldn't pass up the oppertunity to correct you.

Why is it like that? I swear the engines look exactly the same from the top. I thought there was no way it was the 1.6 turboed. I've even heard of guys mounting the turbo manifold on the non turbo 1.8 to turbo them. Why is that? What's going on with this. Did they use the same head and a smaller block? I never would have guessed it was a 1.6 turbo. I've had it in my head that that was the 1.8 turboed for so long that I'm having trouble believing this.

EDIT: I looked up the years too. I assumed since the Storm was made untill 93 that it's conterpart the Impulse would have been made untill the same year. That's the bad thing about assuming.

I always thought those cars were crap cause they looked like crap and smelled like it too. I never even thought that they had a Toyota engine in em. They look so silly and horrible misconfigured.
