My Transmission Just Blew Up - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #31505 31 posts Started by Chanh55
Just filled up my tank with 91 octane after driving home from work... while leaving the gas station, I gassed it and hear.. "CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNK"....and my car stalls....even after I gassed it lightly.

This can't be good... frown.gif

My babies in pain... I feel like crying...seriously...

Anyways... I think it's the transmission. I have auto and my car has about 187K on it. I also noticed that my left strut isn't bouncy like the right one. I'm not sure if this is related or not.

And when I pushed the car (out of moving traffic) it makes a Clunk every revolution.

I towed it to my mechanics, and I'm gonna see how much this is gonna cost me.

Thanks for listening to my problems.
could just be an axle broken...

Really? Would that explain my car grinding when I put it in gear? I'm not trying to sound smart... I really don't know.
After pulling out the gas station ready to hit the speed did the car jerk ? ....... if you it's your tranny you RPM should raise hella high without going anywhere .....

if your axle has broken and is not seated properly in the tranny, it will grind.

from what you said it doesn't sound like a trany problem .. more like something wrong with the engine ...

[TeamNJCT
I'd guess that nothing is wrong with either the engine or tranny if you can put it in neutral and move it. I'd guess axel.
So far they said it's the clutch.
your car should'nt have a clutch, its auto ?

I will return one day.
i told chanh my guess was, left front strut, maybe bearing and axle.
Auto transmissions have clutches... it's just not manually operated. At least that's what I believe.
Hmm.. They just called me again and said, "Oh I thought your car was a manual, actually it's your transmission that's bad."
umm, get your car away from that shop.

Never within the 3 years that I've had her.

sorry about the sad news... i never knew transmissions can just blow outta nowhere..
hope all goes well with the repair.

actually, autos do have clutches, auto clutches they are used in conjuction with the bands to lock/unlock certain parts of the planetary gearset to allow different gear ratios. obviously these werent what the mechanic was talking about since he thought it was a manual. the clutches in auto's do wear out obviously over time and can fail, especially if you drive agressively because the auto's computer will signal tranny to make harder/quicker shifts. i honestly dont know whats wrong with your car though without looking at it. hope you get it rolling soon though.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.
it sounds almost as if the engine has thrown a rod.
I guarentee you 100% that the shop you took it to is lying because its definately a CV shaft problem. If you do it yourself it will onyl cost about 60 bucks because there is a core charge and you can get some money back. Thats if you do it yourself. If a shop does it then your looking at around 250.

You're right hitachi, when they actually went under the car, they notice that it wasn't the tranny it was the wheel bearing and the axle and yes it did cost about 250. Very good...
I was just gonna say that it was the axle for sure, but I guess thats already been cleared up.
sounds like what happened with my axels(yes i mean both)

For any othe car, that's outstanding. For a toyota, it's ok. Mine went about 240k miles before I had to swap it out, and it wasn't because of a mechanical failure or anything. A nut inside the transmission had backed itself off and did some damage inside, thats all. Don't get me wrong, 180k miles on a transmission IS really awesome, but owning a toyota, the standards are a bit higher smile.gif Nevertheless, good luck with the car!

I think Chan means he changed his auto knob to an manual knob ( i remember reading about this a while ago?)
