Suspension Setup - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #30741 32 posts Started by JoKeRkId613
Okay, I'm planning on doing suspension next. I decided on Eibach Sportline Springs since all the feedback is positive. All the others seem good too but there's always at least one person that doesn't like them. So Eibach Sportlines for the springs and there's not many choices for struts/shocks. Koni, KYB, and Monroe seem to be the only choices so I'm going with KYB GR-2 Struts/Shocks. Since Monroe only sells struts and Koni only sells shocks, I figure I get the KYBs that come with both. What do you guys think about this combination? How many fingers space will there be between the tires and the car?

I also want to improve the handling on the Celi and this is where I need help. I'm thinking of getting the J-speed strut braces for the front and rear. But in the picture of the parts database, the rear looks like it was made for the hatchback only. would the rear fit my coupe? if not then im going to get the trd front strut brace and not have a rear brace. i will also be getting j-speed side tower braces

Now I just want to know about the Cusco Lower Arm Bar and the JIC Magic Type 1 Lower Frame Brace. Can you have both of these on the car at the same time or will one interfere with the other? I don't know too much about these braces or anything with suspension, period. Thanks in advance guys.

EDIT: Are there any other parts not posted in the database that'll improve suspension/handling?

kybs are shock inserts for the fronts, and whole struts in the rear. monroes are all struts. bilsteins are the same as kyb, 2 shocks, 2 struts.

Ok... well im confused now. from factory, our cars have 2 shocks up front and 2 struts in the rear? is that right?. so if i got monroes, it'll be 4 struts all around? whats the best thing to get? and bilsteins is the entire shick or just the shock inserts? whats the difference? im very confused now...
the strut is 2 pieces, theres a shock absorber that goes inside the strut housing. therefore the kybs would require you to open the housing and put the shock insert in. the rears are all set.
btw, i tried monroes, and didnt like em, too bumpy for me.
ok...so theres a strut on all 4 wheels with a shock thing in it. is there any company that sells all 4 to replace all 4? so your bilstein shocks are on all 4 tires?
kyb does both the front and rear. i just got mine last week. check ebay..i paid 193.99 shipped.

ok... great kyb sells the front and back. but are they shocks or struts or what? i dont get it? how does the suspension work? thanks
:::sigh::: 2 struts and 2 shocks. front and rear. would you like me to take pics of them in the box for you? b/c i can. i can go out to my car, open the trunk and take a pic of the box. would that clear things up?

A strut and shock perform the same function. Our cars run on struts. The difference is that there is an additional housing with struts. KYB is not performance, its OEM spec shocks. If you wanna get the cusco and JIC lower arm bars, it'll depend on which cusco lower arm bar you get. If you wanna run both types, just get the cusco lower arm 1 and 2, forget about JIC.
that would be great. so if im understanding correctly. its 2 shocks and 2 struts per wheel. making it 8 pieces in total. so if i buy kyb's, it'll come with all 8? 4 shocks and 4 struts? thanks in advance for the pics. sorry, im a noob when it comes to suspension...

EDIT: OK, sorry about the previous dumb reply. Okay, so it's 2 shocks in the front(1 per tire), and 2 struts in the rear(1 per tire). that's according to kyb. so what do you mean that ours are all struts all around if kyb says these are oem spec.

im trying to get him to understand that most strut options are 2 struts and 2 inserts, he would need to take the front cap of his strut and insert a shock. many gt versions cant do that (mine was sealed over) therefore i needed to get a st strut housing and do it.
so theres no performance shocks/struts for celicas?
koni's are performance shocks.
you dont need a rear strut bar with a couple, the trunk IS the strut bar >wink.gif>

bilsteins are performace as well arent they?

Gotcha. Cool. So Koni's are performance shocks(front). Does anyone make performance struts(rear)? Monroe's struts says it's a replacement, so I'm guessing those are OEM style also. That's cool. So I save money on the rear strut bar. I guess I'll go with the TRD front strut since I don't need the back.

Well I only see 1 Cusco lower arm bar(Parts Database). So I don't know what you mean by 1 and 2. So you're saying JIC is basically the cusco 1 and 2 put together, right?

You should also get sway bars (c-one or sus tech)...this will improve body roll...which is key to great handling!

(strut bars do not do a whole lot for the price ( i think c-ones are in the mid hundreds-just for one!)...maybe should rethink that...but i'd have to say...if i have the extra $$ laying around...i'd include strut bars to the whole setup)

Good luck!

I just checked the parts database and I only see suspension tech's sway bars. It doesn't sho as C-ONE making a sway bar... These are for both front and rear which sounds great to me. They don't have any pictures tho. I see that Coomer and Jgreening have the front and back. Would one of you guys be able to get me a pic of the sway bars? Thanks.

Cool. Yeah, the ST sways sound a lot better to me as far as price. Lol. My pockets aren't that deep. Is there really a difference between the C-ONE and ST? I mean, besides price? Is it just a brand preferance type of thing? If so, I'm going with ST, you don't really see the sway bars anyway, right?
This is some chatting i did with other people about this issue...esp. read the later part of it!

i say tune your suspension from the ground up; add parts to fix what you dont like.

*slaps forehead* no. here. that is what i bought...what i was talking about in my previous post. maybe you can finally understand the shock/strut issue since you are unable to find the answer yourself. i'm not trying to be an ass about it, i'm just tired of all your questions about things that have been covered a billion times. >smile.gif>

it's cool man. i dont have patience either. lol. im just trying to learn. sometimes i want to search but cant think of a 4 letter word or whhatever the case may be. or i might find something but i always have questions because i want to know as much as i can. but yeah bro. thanks. i only have 1 question about the pic in the ebay site. theres 6 pieces there. and theyre selling 2 shocks and 2 struts. im assuming the shocks are the two bigger pieces with the wide circle in the middle. the struts im assuming are the 2 pieces in the middle farther part standing up. but what are the 2 thin sticks that dont show any shiny chrome stick that is laying on the ground there on the right? thanks.
....dude....4 pieces. one per corner. again, would you like me to out to my car and take a f*cking picture for you?
and it's not so much searching this site, use the INTERNET. 6gc is not the only place to find celica parts.

-dstrb

we have struts all the way around. All four corners. if you cut open the strut you see the shock insert, which is the damper that is held inside the strut housing. If you buy struts, you replace the strut, if you by shock inserts you have to cut open your existing strut and pull out the old insert and put in the new one. JIC is not the cusco 1 and 2 together. There is the JIC lower arm bar and there are 2 version of the cusco lower arm bar. One of the cusco arm bars is basically the same as the JIC one. The other cusco one is a different bar all together.

f uck it then. i was just tyring to understand how this works. i wasnt born into cars and i know you dont have to be and still know a lot of stuff but i recently got into the whole car thing. so i dont know sh!t about suspension or springs, struts, shocks, sway bars, etc. i apologize for pissing you off but theres been times where i didnt understand something at all here and people actually post pictures of what things look like and what they're called, what they do, etc and i learn like that. i guess i'll just leave the whole suspension thing for last because it bothers you to explain something to me in detail. or i guess i'll try asking my friend who works at toyota to explain it to me since he has more patience. i know you didnt mean to come off as a whatever you wanna call it because i know how it is when you know something that to you it's so simple and it takes the other person a while to get it. but that's cool bro. thanks for your help anyway. i appreciate it. i did search the internet but i'd rather have it be celica spec so that i understand it better.
Well I have no clue where you headed with your Celica, & I am not here to bash you or anything negitive. Learning new things are always good but on your profile you wrote you have alredy installed ( Dolecek Racing Cold Air Intake, Bosch Platinum & Nitrous Oxide )
Which bring me to a point to ask .... how does your car handle when you press the NOS? Most people seem to start of they're car with handling instead of things they seen on the movie Fast & The Furious. You should stop by your local automotive shop / store & pic up some reading materials (For exp. Repair Manual) user posted image which would cost you about $9.99 ~ what ever price. It'll start you off some where with some ideas of the car rather then asking 100 question at a time, reading & seeing what's under the hood of your own car is the best way of learning about your car rather then just asking.

Hey dude, don't worry about it...i went through the same thing...so i know what you're feeling...what people do not realize here is that there are some questions that have not been previously posted...so i'd say, if you can't find your answer (make sure you search this awesome site first!)....just post up a question!....you'll find someone that will take their time to answer them!...i'd do it but i'm like you! >wink.gif>

anyway, a member here by the name of jgreening should be cool enough to answer your Q's...he was able to answer mine! (pm him with your questions)

Good Luck!
