Cold Air Intakes - 6G Celicas Forums

Hey Guys, thanks for all the great responses about turboing my Celica...now I have another question...

-do cold air intakes really help performance?...or do they just sound cool? (No pun intended:))...

-is it worth the price?...and where do you get them??

- - -i found one on ebay, w/a k&n filter for $113.00...

-also how is the hp increase?...I assume the engine likes these guys b/c it gets more air to it??

***Let me know what you think in general about cold air intakes...***

They do help, but not as much as people think. It sounds cooler more than it helps. It gives a bit of better responce, and when its cold out, it somewhat feels like quicker accel. but prolly more my imagination.

Now for $120 i wouldnt, but I paid umm $30 for a CAI.. I think thats well worth it. I got a 92-95 civic intake. It dosnt look as good as some but does the job. I ran it through the orig path into the fender for better cold air.

A Short ram intake, IMHO not worth it at all, just sucking in hot air.

Stock intakes are designed for the engine, if the engine is stock, it wont do much. If you have mods it will help, but again not much.

But mine sounds well like a vacum everytime i start it, and when its cold.. its awsome.. Il try an get a vid clip next time i remember.

i find it funny that everybody critisizes people of bein "rice" when they have the afterburners but have a CAI and a muffler. To me thats just as "rice" as anythin else.

#1) if you are NOT turbo a CAI is the best intake you can get....i have AEM
#2) if you ARE turbo then you want a short ram

Rice is the non-functional mod that people think are functional, or the distastefully over-done visual mods.

A proper CAI and muffler can be functional, or they can be rice. Here's the difference: "my CAI and stainless-steel straight-through muffler will generate about 5 HP if I'm lucky" versus "my intake and fart cannon let me walk on Vipers."

i have had three different "CAI" for my 99 gt. i just tested different designs and stuck with the one that gave me the most power

the first one i had was more like a short ram that put the filter right where the stock air box was... that gave me a tiny bit of power, but mostly sounded cool and saved gas

the second one i had put the filter right next to the battery and right behind the radiator. the problem with this one was that if it was hot out and the motor had been running for a while all the intake was doing was sucking hot air... but at night i could feel a noticable amount of power from it

i had to make custom piping for it but the power gain and sound is well worth it.
it sucks in freezing cold air from right behind the front bumper in front of the radiator

the one on ebay is sketch... that looks like a 7a-fe and that intake might not fit the 5s-fe in your gt

but yah they help, and help a lot more with a nice cat back exhaust
its well worth the $100 or so that you will pay for it

where did you get the AEM CAI...i've been all o'round on the internet looking for one that is for the my celi...all i've found was the one on ebay...how much did you pay for it?

Hey, thanks a lot for the advice...looks like an efficient one!...what do you mean you had to make custom piping?? (I like the price...I might just have to get it!)

i just bought the filter and the box intake... they dont make specific piping for the celica so i took it to my local exhaust/ muffler shop and had them make me som piping for it

it works great and i love it

Do you have any pics?...it would be great if i could see what it looks like...and how the piping was run...!...also, how did it improve performance? (hp/torque...or anything else)

dont have any pictures now... i stuck the intake right infront of the radiator and mounted it to the bar that runs behind the bumper about half way up from the bumper to the hood

now the piping is 2.5 inch and i ran it around the radiator, up underneath the battery, then there is a 90 degree bend and it comes up next to the battery and runs back over the starter motor to the intake manifold... from a top view it looks a lot like that ebay intake except it was fit to a 5s-fe.

ill get some pics for you soon. maybe within the week

performance wise i got a lot more throttle response, ive been saving a lot of gas, and the motor sounds a lot more like a motor

im sure i got more power. its noticable but i wouldnt say much more than 5 or 10 horses and maybe a skotch of torque? maybe.

the main thing about that intake is that you will always have the coldest air possible and it is being forced into the intake which helps a lot

Great! Does this get you more air than the ebay one?...or any other I could purchase on the internet? (Like the AME the guy prior had mentioned)...but since you've tested these...i assume you're a pro!...how much did the welding cost? Does the website not make piping for the celi?...the pictures would be great...I’d probably save me some money on the welding if i took it to the shop...plus, I’d like to see it in general...thanks a lot for your time...this really, really helps...

also, is the sound just a more beefy sound?...like it's runnin' 500 hp? >smile.gif>

i cant preach this enough,
Injen short ram = hot air and short throttle response ($100+)
Custom cai = cold air and too long response ($30+)
Stock medium cai = good repsonse and cold air (FREE!)
...i recommend the stock air, just remove the big box under the fender. it sucks up more "cold" air since box isnt constricting air flow. another bonus is stock look and feel, when going for smog checks, they cant say you have anything illegal. The price is also nice, its FREE!!!

I have an injen short ram intake, And when i was at the dyno here with one of my buddies, i asked the guy working this same question, and he said honestly all intakes are different for every car. Don't know if thats true, But whatever you thinks best for your car.

I can't find any AEMs for my car???where do i go look at them....?...and how does it compare to the current one you have?

no idea where to pick them up... i looked forever to find the one i have now

its a slightly different design
the AEM intake is going to b a normal filter and the arospeed intake is going to be the intercooler looking thing... i believe the arospeed may force some air into the motor which would help

it'll pass smog if the guy isnt like wtf is this ****

with 2.5 inch exhaust, straight through muffler, and the intake i can pass an emisions test

aem will not work with a GT only ST
that front mount.....don't waste the money

if you really want sumthing that will work take advice from LEW and the VW guys.......
drop in k&n air filter, remove all that plastic crap in your fender, and if you really want to make it cool, then run a 3" tube from your front bumper up the fender and into your stock box

People are talking about this intake as being bad on response- - i guess due to the long piping...?...anyway, since you have it on your car...does it mess with any of the performance aspects?

no it adds to the the performance...i really didn't notice any loss of throttle response do to the fact my intake was 3" so i got more air volume then everyone's typical 2.5"....and it helped mid to hid rpm range being cold air so i give a CAI a thumbs up
but really

just do a k&n drop in air filter, with removed fender wall crap that will be the best bet

I just bought this cai...


Ebay Item number: 7993563772

it is specifically for my 2.2 L GT...so it will work out great...i would have gone with the arospeed thing...but local shops wanted to see it...so i'd have to buy it...and hourly in local shops here is like $80...so it would have a hefty final price tag...plus...this one won't have so many bends...and it's a 3 in. piping...take a look at it..copy.paste it into ebay search!

$140 for that lol.... i could've spent that kindda money on a INJEN intake. now that's specifically for your GT although it's a short ram. but $140 for that... urbandork's how to would cost you like $50 max..

The Injen intakes are short ram...i don't want to kill my mpg...and just suck hot air...this is a COLD air intake...I know i could have made it...but i don't have that time...this is one that will work great...
