alright ...i have done alot of search on the forums but they never really talk about ..what type of axles are being used with the mr2 turbo transmission ??.. plus the car has been sitting for 2 month now without any clue on what type of axles are being used !!!!!! here a little infor on the project car its a 94 celica st 5sp with a 3sgte 2ndgen from a mr2 turbo...and now all i need is just the axles.to get the car running.....

P.S dont get flame >> cauz no one really cover what type of axles are being used on the mr2 turbo transmission .maybe someone did cover about it but ..i never really got the clear informantion about it..so..what type of axles are really being used.

ok from what i know 91 camry outers and the inners have to match with the year of the tranny. and also i think celica3sgte mentioned that a specific (i think) year alltrac axle as the outer would work.

You can use 90-93 all-trac outers or v6 camry outers. And you need the inner axles, stub shaft and bracket that match up to the mr2 tranny you have.

Like I have a 91 mr2 turbo tranny without lsd and abs. I need the mr2 stub shaft, bracket, carrier bearing, and passenger side inner axle, then you need the driverside inner axle as well. You unbolt the inner axle from the outer and bolt the inner to the outer of the alltrac axles.

also another question about transmission.??? isn't the 91-94 mr2 5sfe non-turbo and the celica gt 5sfe has the same transmission ??? since its alot harder to find the celica gt 5sfe transmission..could i just used the mr2 5sfe tranny as welled instead of using a celica gt transmission, since the celica gt and the mr2 5sfe has the same engine and tranny...

Its the same tranny but the shift linkage is still reversed I think, the same as the turbo tranny, but I'm not sure on this.

Both trannies you need to do some custom stuff to use, the e153 you have to make the axles and a either a st205 rear mount or a custom mount, switch the shift linkages, and if you have a 93 or older you have to switch the speedo assy. to an electric one instead of the mechanical one that is in a 93 or older. The s54 you have to piece together a clutch kit and its not as strong.

since its like that ...couldnt i just got buy a 5sfe tranny and take the shiftlinkage off of it and bolt it on to the mr2 turbo tranny....??? or is there some other way converting the mr2 turbo tranny to a FF.?. i did came across this web sit .look like it belong to 6gc member http://www.geocities.com/zegoat2000/e1531.html

No you have to have the alltrac tranny shift linkage to do the mr2 turbo tranny. Or if you can find a solara tranny you can use that without converting the shift linkage because the engine is in the front.

Your not converting the tranny to FF your just puttiing the linkage on the other side of the tranny so that the linkage is on the side of the tranny closest to the firewall.

No if you want the e153 tranny there is no other way, you have 2 options.

1. An mr2 turbo e153 tranny and the all trac tranny with shift linkage like it says on steve's site.

2. A solara v6 tranny.

If you want the 5sfe tranny save yourself the headache and just get one from a celica or other front mount engine car.

And the shift linkage from a V6 camry or alltrac. I would recommend getting the shift linkage from the same year car as your tranny as I had problems with mine originally because they used the shift linkage from a 92 alltrac but I have a 93 MR2T tranny. I replaced the linkage with that from a 93 alltrac and it worked. The total cost of the new shift linkage parts was about $160 from Toyota.

ok so anyone happen to know exactly what's required if the solara or camry v6 tranny is used? is it the same procedure as the mr2t tranny way in terms of axles, shift linkage, and mounts???

No, its not. The shift linkage bolts up - unlike the MR2T. You are still going to need MR2T inner shafts and V6 camry or alltrac outers.

No, they don't sell it complete. There is something like 13 small parts that need to be assembled. I suggest that you GO TO a toyota dealer (do not call for this one) and tell the guy what you need. Essentially, you need the actuator and all the parts that go on to the actuator. The main actuator shaft attaches to the firewall side of the tranny by four bolts and that is the part that hooks up to the shift cables. On the other side of the mounting plate, the actuator extends into the tranny and the other parts fit onto the shaft. A few of them are similar to tumblers in a lock mechanism and serve to select the gears. (Warning, the terms I am using here like "shift linkage" "actuator" etc. may not be all that precise but if you explain what parts you want to a competent toyota parts guy, you should be ok).

ah wow great info. so the shift linkage (GT shift linkage correct?) bolts right up to the camry v6 trans right? and the axles still gutta be assembled just as if ure using the mr2t tranny. what about the mounts? st205 mounts (the 3 tranny mounts) are a direct bolt to the camry v6 trans? tho i imagine so since its still an e153 tranny right?

Yes, although there is some debate if using ST205 cables might be better. I have the GT cables on mine and they are working but I have had intermittent shifting problems that are currently resolved. My current theory about my shifting woes is worn motor mounts.

As for the motor mounts, I think you need a ST205 rear mount and either GT or ST205 mounts in the other places if you are using the E153. I am not sure about this though. I would do a search on the word "mount" in the forced induction section and look for posts by a guy named ESMS or something like that. He is from Australia and did the MR2T tranny conversion himself and has some good info on mounts.

The V6 Camry MT is the same fitment and operation as the MR2T tranny. The only difference is gearing.

ah aright so then im pretty sure that st205 mounts are needed, actually prolly smarter to use than any other mounts. since thats what supersprint is using on his mr2t tranny. personally im also gunna go with the e153 conversion when next year rolls around and i think ill try the solara or the camry v6 tranny since theyre already front wheel drive trannies. thnx alot jgreening, ur an invaluable source of info! >>

You can use the st205 rear mount, and driverside mount, or you can use the st185 driverside insulator with the mr2 tranny mount, and use the GT bracket and weld a peice of metal to the bottom of the rear insulator that moves it over like an inch and a half.

This is what I plan on doing I have the alltrac insulator with the mr2 tranny bracket, and going custom rear mount. It takes 8 weeks to get the st205 mounts and I can get a custom rear mount from autolab for less than a $100.

You are correct.

St205 left insulator and bracket. (Bracket is no longer available from toyota)

St205 rear bracket and insulator. Only way its going to work w/o going custom

Gt front and right side insulators+brackets. The fronts are actually indentical on both models but have different part numbers.

You can use your gt shifter cables but you'll need some thicker u clips to hold them into place. I'll post some pics of mine when I can be bothered.

When I last checked with toyota Aust. they wanted AU$600 for the 205 cable set.

It only takes a week to get driveline parts in from japan to Australia through toyota because they take priority over cosmetic or body parts, surely it must be the same to the U.S. They'll either tell you up to 3-4 weeks because a. they can be bothered getting them for you or b) just in case the japs are having one of those crazy holiday periods or strikes that go on for weeks at the shipping ports.

While on the topic of Axles I really want to clarify what people have actually used. I've tried using several setups but only one so far has worked. I would like everyone thats done the conversion to state what they've used.

Nothing is more time wasting or annoying than people giving rubbish suggestion or advice because they heard a friend may or may have not used this or that succesfully. Or just going by rumours.

It really needs to cleared up and put in a proper How-to.

I've got a '92 mr2 e153 with lsd, I'm using a middle (the w/ the carrier) shaft with a diameter of 31.3mm no circlip (I think all years are same), 185 outers and 92+ (Lsd) inner stub. I'm having concerns with the way the cvs are stretched atm and will try using a longer in the future.

(Because I only have experience with models available to Aust. and jap imports the following only refers to jdm mr2 e153s)

From all the time spent looking at the toyota Australia's parts finder program, the left inner stub changed from jan 92. They only have one part n# listed for later models there is no reference to lsd or non-lsd. Models produced dec 91 or earlier have the same part no as all camry v6 manuals boxes.


The early model inner left stub is the one with the circlip roughly 7mm from the end. This one is available in abundance in Aust. so most ignorant wreckers think there is only one type.

The Late model is the one with the circlip roughly 20mm from the end.


If anyone knows anymore or any better than this please let us all know so We can put an end to these axle questions

I'm using the GT Passenger side mount on my swap - doesn't seem to be a problem yet. Custom bracket for the rear.

The ST shifter cables are working as well.

I may have a set of new ST185 outers for sell soon - they fit fine for the stock hubs, but are an inch too short for the ST205 superstruts / hubs.

This is what I have on at the moment, I'll post later on how well it is working.

I have a e153 non lsd tranny, with 91 carrier shaft also with no circlip, 91 driverside innershaft with st185 outers on both sides.

For mounts I have the gt front and passenger side, the st185 or mr2 driverside insulator, mr2 tranny bracket, the mr2 rear bracket, same as the gt, and custom rear insulator.

I also have the st shifter cables they seem to work just fine, no problems with my hand hitting the dash or anything but then again I have a short shifter, the st185 are to short.
