Extremly Stubborn Axel Nuts - 6G Celicas Forums

>mad.gif> Im trying to break the axel nuts loose on my 94st (7a) and they just wont budge. Ive tried electric impact gun, air gun, putting a crowbar between the studs to keep wheel from spinning (bent a stud), tried using my 1/2in. craftsman ratchet with a breaker bar and broke the ratchet. I dont know what else to do. Please help me with any suggestions, thanks.

have somone sit in the car and press the brakes. then use a 1/2in drive with a really long cheater bar.... i have a long 4 foot pipe that i bought in a hardware store for this.

thanks for the advice i appriciate it. However I tried already. The brakes cant be used cause ive diconnect all the lines to pull the motor, so what i did was put a large screw driver in the rotor slot so the caliper would prevent the wheel from moving. I then used a 4ft breaker bar and my 1/2 drive ratchet broke at the cube. I went to sears and replaced it alread. (craftsman) Thanks for the advice anyway.
if i remembered correctly.. resinstall the rim/tire of the car.
Put the car back on the floor. The tire grip on the ground should be great enough for you to break that nut loose.
buy an electric impact wrench... i use mine all the time but i do swaps 3-4 a month.. only costs like 45$-60$

if you really need to you could just disconnect the boot and slide it right out. You will need to save the clamp or buy a kit though
lol good thing it was craftsman!

also i think you have to put the lug nuts on the studs before you put something there to stop it so that bend/treadwarp wouldn't happen
drain the nut in WD-40 for a good 20 minutes.. then with an impact gun the well should not move.... if you have an auto put the car in park if now put it in 3rd gear... if that doesn't work.. get a blow torch and heat up the nut till its tuning read.. and that sould get it off if not.. then don't know what to tell you ..

Hit the nut with pb blaster, we stuck a screwdriver in the disk brake to keep it from turning. Then get yourself a breaker bar, and a pipe to put over it. Use that leverage and weight!

Thanks everyone for the advice i finally got them off. I borrowed a breaker bar from autozone and put a 4ft tube over it and that gave me enough leverage to break the nut. Thanks again, im sure this info will help others in the future.
ummmm so a breaker bar worked but an impact gun did nothing? thats seems very odd to me.

its actually very believable. Unless you have an ultra awesome impact gun, you wont be able to get the same amount of torque onto that nut.


The breaker bar is your friend, i suggest investing in one if you do work on ur own car, they're great / neccesary for stubborn nuts and bolts.

That and a butload of pb-blaster

yeah i just use cheater pipes i bought from hardware stores... you can get way more torque out of then then any impact gun.

Yeah I love my impact, but when a bolt doesn't budge, out comes my 18" breaker bar. I have yet to come across a bolt that would come loose with that yet! >smile.gif>

My seceret technique. Use your breaker bar than attach a crossed lug nut remover at the end of your bar. This makes the thing 2-3 ft long and should loosen anything or break everything.
