timing belt broken? Help - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #28311 10 posts Started by madmods
Im working on my car right now, and I got the 5sfe. I believe my timing belt broke because my rotor under the distrubutor cap does not spin when the motor is cranked. Is there a plug in the timing belt cover i can take off to see the belt? How do i get to it, remove the passenger wheel? What else do you recommend i change> water pump? anything else. Im still stranded since thursday!!! Thanks guys.

im screwed!!! its the timing belt, and i just spent 192 on a coil some plugs and wires. Not only that, but they sent me coils for the 7 not the 5. I looked under the timing belt cover, and pulled the broken belt out a little. The relief, is at least now i know what it is.
can you do a how to? cuz i just bought a timing belt and want to change mine... but not sure if I can tackle it or not >frown.gif>

To my knowledge Toyota engines are non interference engines, and does not take damage from "running" with a broken timing belt.. I don't want to bet on it though. I just remember to have heard that somewhere..

Also, our old Camry broke down when the timing belt snapped.. Nothing else got damaged..
i dont think it damages the engine. when my all trac's timing belt snap i try to start it a couple of times and the tow truck dude tried it a couple of time and it was still fine.
Hope for u it won't happen while pushing >biggrin.gif>
Change the timing belt, water pump, pulley and tensioner to avoid any problems in that area down the line... The motor is NON-interference and no damage will be done by a broken timing belt or trying to start the car with the broke belt. >smile.gif>
ooo i need to change my belt too, and a oil change...
