What is this little "box" on my intake? I can only imagine it's some sort of silencer or something.. To keep the sound from the intake down.. Then again, I'm mechanicly impaired (spelling?) and don't know crap about engines.

your guess is correct. It also helps reduce sudden surges of air from going into your engine.

Does the USDM 5S-FE also have this silencer on the intake? I have seen a few pictures, but haven't seen any boxes like that.

Also, what would the difference be, if I removed it? Or closed the hole that goes from my intake "tubing" and into that box..

If you make a custom or buy a prebuilt CAI or Short ram intake, that box goes away, so it can't be all that bad.. Or? What would a sudden surge of air into my engine cause?

The 5SFE actually has two resonators, a large one in the fender and a small kidney-shaped on near the air filter box.

One of the reasons people put on short-rams is to get noise -- it doesn't increase performance on our engines, since the stock CAI aren't that badly designed. Pulling off a resonator will smooth airflow but increase noise.

One guy on this Corolla board was claiming 8-10 hp gain from removing that "box".. On a stock car (89'-ish Corolla 1.6 litre).. I was shouting BS but he just wouldn't listen. He even claimed that he had dyno sheets as proof. Haven't seen them yet though.

And the 6 200 rpm redline is also found on US spec Celicas then? Didn't someone say that the US 7A-FE had like 5 800 redline or something..

I'm pretty sure my car (or engine) is Euro spec. (US was a typo, I'm pretty sure my car is Euro spec)

EDIT: And since my car is a 99', I'm even more sure. They didn't sell any (or produce I guess) STs in US in 99'. Didn't they stop at 97' or something? And just sold the GT after that..

6200rpm is red line yes. The Euro version is higher I believe.

I don't agree to that. You are telling me that my European car is USDM, and that a Euro spec car would have even higher redline? The GT have 7 000 or something, but this is still the 7A-FE (ST).. And if my car is in fact USDM, what would a Euro spec intake header look like?

Wrong, All euro ST's have 6200 Redline, and this is Euro engine, cuz he lives in Norway.... And about the TB's and intake manifolds - they are compleatly the same on Euro/USDM celicas...

Some Intake manifolds are different, might be this depends on the year of the engine....

Okey, so this guy has replied again.. And this time he is cursing and litteraly pissed off.. He thinks I'm ruining his car thread....

I asked for proof, since he said he have so many, and he gave me a link to a thread for a car with full new exhaust, cai and some few other minor mods (and this removal of silencer in intake mod). The car got dynoed from 60 kilowatts -> 73.5 kilowatts with those mods. The link for dyno sheet wasn't working though.

I'm a moderator at that forum, and the guy is all pissed at me now because I'm a mod, and ruining for him etc.. I really haven't said anything or done anything, so I asked him nicely to tell me what I have done/said that is wrong, and to give me some proof. Can't wait to see his next response.

Can someone really quick give me the formula to convert kw into hk? I think it's 1.3 or something.. 1 kw = 1.3 hk or something like that. In that case, this dude have gotten, or claims to have gotten a 16 hk gain from new header, downpipe, free flow cat, and cat back exhaust + new K/N filter and removal of silencer, right?

And yet this dude on the forum trying to use this as proof say he can get 8-10 (that is more than 50% of the other dudes improvement in performance) from only one (and to me, looks like the least important) mod of those listed..

it is called a resonator. It is primarily to reduse the intake/growel of the engine. You can take that little box off and plug it with a vitamin bottle cap. There is another one also, on the side of the air box there is a tube near the fuse box that goes into the fender. That is connected to another big sealed resonator box. That is where some people put a CAI.


what would that cause ? usually quicker throttle responce, some people say more HP (maybe .5 - 1 in reality)

The bat explained how to remove the upper resonator. How do you remove the fender resonator? BTW, how do I get my fender off, I searched and found, tried and failed.

when I removed my front bumper I removed the resonator. To take off the fender there are 3-4 bolts on top, 2-3 on the bottom, remove the wheel well plastics, and the 3 nuts that hold the fender to the bumper.

probably easier to just take the front bumper off and take it out that way. There were 2-3 bolts (10mm) holding it to the chasis.

Why do you want to take off the whole fender just to remove that box? Just take fender well parcially out in the front. That's how I did it. I put my CAI on that way too. You don't haff to take much off at all really. Wheel, 6-8 bolts (very easy), and there you go.

Yeah, and only towrds the front if you want. You can take it haff off and kind of peal it back, and get out everything you need.

Indeed, laid under the car today and only remove the part of the bottom of the Wheel well you can stretch it enough to reach the box .

The airbox was a pain in the @ss to reach for my upper bolt (removing bumper). But thats offtopic >>
