Smoked and Redded Tails - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #26741 18 posts Started by 1900WattCelica
I decided I didnt want the yellow anymore, and I decided I wanted darker tails. Therefore, I decided to do both with the help of Testors candy apple red, black window tint, and clear coat. I am really happy with the results:

These taillights came from coomers purple celi
Wait wait wait, u mixed red & black together? i only used black tail light tint, what did the red do for you I cant tell >confused.gif>
Your taillights are pretty much black, there really smoked good. I didnt want to go that dark since I had a white car (soon to be blue). I took those pics in the shade...there not that dark in the sunlight, but there noticably darker than stock. I decided to red out them first so that I could darken them without any yellow showing. My goal is to get rid of all the yellow from the lights, and Ill achieve it after i install my 96+ bumper and clear turns.
I will post more pics of them in the sunlight tomorrow. If you look at the side pics I have, they look more like the color of the red thats on the very corners of the lights all through the taillights.
ooooh I see >tongue.gif> actually mine arent THAT dark....pics can be deceiving! If I took pics in the afternoon you can see that they are kinda red/black

those tinted tails are very nice!
Haha, glad to see some purple Celi parts. >tongue.gif>

Do you guys have trouble seeing your turn signals/brake lights in direct sunlight? I know I had too much paint on mine and my friends would always complain that I never used my turn signals, but it was just because they were so hard to see.

Also, how much clear did you use and how thick did you shoot it on? It doesn't look very glossy. I sanded the paint off of my tails and then wetsanded with 600 grit before I shot two coats of clear on it, and they look very, very glossy now.

Well I pretty much scuffed my tails, and then went at it with the paint. I began by spraying the red all over, 5 coats on the yellow corners and 1 on the red part, to equalize the red all over. I then used 5 coats of window tint spray, followed by 3 coats of clear. All of my coats were very very thin and I didnt wetsand or anything between switching colors, and no they are a very matte finish, not gloss at all. I may want to redo it somehow in order to get the glossier appearance. I believe I can see my turn signals just fine in direct sunlight.
This ones alittle redder and has alittle more sunlight. Im deciding whether I like the matte finish better or if I should do some thicker clear:

I agree with you, like that bronze colored car in the middle of the posts. Thats why I was careful not to go tooo dark. Mine still look very red, I am trying a different look by eliminating all yellow lighting from the mix. I like to think im alittle more creative than to just get JDMs >smile.gif> I will update my profile with full car shots sometime soon and Ill show you guys how I believe it works with the overall image of the car.
