Will a 100 watt amp be enough for 4 speakers? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #26542 19 posts Started by Cutrara
I have a Sony Xplod HU, Pioneer 3-ways in the doors, and stocks in the back. I'm definatly going to replace the rears before I amplify anything. So lets assume I have 4 pioneers 3 ways. Would a 100 watt amp be alright? I don't want/need subs at this time. Just want to ampilfy my speakers.

Thanks,
Alex Cutrara

although you dont NEED a 4 channel amp... its the best route to go i personally think when powering more than a pair of speakers/components.... get a 4 channel amp that does about 50rms each channel....

I'm not sure how many channels it is, but I know it's 100 watts.

The reason I'm asking is my friend is giving me some stereo equipment for $35.

-100 Watt Amp
-2 Tweeters
-2 Crossovers
-Amp Wiring kit
-Extra Wiring

I'll find out how many channels it is by Tuesday, but what if it's a 2 channel?

well find out the brand and the model number, ok so you have a component set almost... just missing the midbass driver.. anyway if it is just two channel then use it to power the front speakers.. and power the rest off the HU.

I got 4 4-way Premier 260Watt speakers in the celi. 6.5". if i get the GM-6150F, which is a 4channel 600watt amp from premier. would this make my speakers sound better? dumb question??? what would be the difference. my speakers sounds good right now. i have no amp right now. i guess its 150 watts per speaker with that amp, right? thats good or what? i just need some info. i can get the amp for 100. i wanna know if its worth it.
I'm kinda new with car audio: Do I need one channel for each speaker or one channel for each pair of speakers?

Each channel is capable of producing a type of output. That means if you hook 2 speakers up to the same channel, it will produce the same sound. If you only bought a 2 channel amp, and hooked the fronts up to 1 channel and the backs up to the other channel, the front two will produce the same sound and the back two will produce the same sound.

Obviously you would then be incapable of listening to true stereo cds that have different sounds for the front left, front right, back left and back right. You need 4 channels for that, 1 channel for each of the front left, front right, back left and back right.

Bottom line, you SHOULD have 1 channel for each of the 4 different sections of the car. My recommendation is to get a 4 channel amp, or get two 2 channel amps.

I got the stuff today and heres what I plan to do:

- It's a 2-channel amp, so I'm just amplifying the front
- The stock rear speakers will be unamplified, until I get better speakers and a new amp.
- The front will be amplified with my pioneer 3-ways, crossovers, and tweeters.

I might not even install the 100 Watt amp, because my sister has a 300 Watt Amp lying around and I'll see if I can get that off of her.

Actually, you CAN listen to true stereo if you wire the speakers in parallel. If you connect the Front Right and Rear Right to the same channel and then connect the Front Left and Rear Left to the same channel, you will then have stereo sound in the front AND in the back.

The key here is that the amp HAS TO BE 2 ohm stable. Check the specs on the amp and make sure that it is.
If not, the only other way to hook up 4 speakers to 2 channels is to wire them in series. I would suggest checking out www.crutchfield.com and doing a search for speaker wiring for more information on this.

One last piece of advice, if you're just using the rear speakers for "fill" - that is, just to provide a little sound in the back, then using the head unit's built-in amp will be sufficient.
4 channel amps are not 2ohm stable, so..... anyway, your speakers will perform better, sound cleaner/clearer with more power that a HU will not offer... sure HU's can power speakers fine, but speakers sound better when getting the cleaner power an amp offers(if it isnt crap)... but its up to you...

some 4 channel amps are 2ohm stable just depends on the brand, and the quality of the craftsmanship of the piece.

I know someone already said it, but yeah, there are plenty of 4 ch amp that ARE 2 ohm stable so I don't know where you get that from.

And yes, you're right about an external amp giving a more powerful, cleaner sound but that power is being wasted if you're just using it for rear fill. Anyway, you also suggested he use the HU amp to power the rear speakers, so I'm not sure why you're contradicting yourself.
the only way the amp will be 2ohm stable is if he bridges it... i was not talking about bridging the amp... i was talking about running the four speakers to each channel.... sorry if i didnt clarify... and hey... why are we being an a$shole pal?

I'm not trying to be an a**hole, I'm just trying to provide accurate information so that this guy knows what his options are.

I don't know what bridging has to do with the amp being 2 ohn stable. It's either stable in stereo or bridged mode, or it's not. You don't have to bridge the amp to take advantage if it IS 2 ohm stable.
Again, you can wire the speakers in parallel to get almost the same 2ch power to 4 speakers. The amp will run hotter and it's not as clean but you can do it. So, IF his amp is 2 ohm stable he CAN connect all four speakers to just 2 channels.
that is not enough i'm my opinion, my dech pust out 220 (ish) to the 4 speakers and that seems to do just fine. 100 is really not much, I would go with no less then 200 but its up to you.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. I'm getting a 300 Watt amp from my sister on Monday.

your deck doesnt put out near 220watts man... decks put out around 10 - 25rms or so... so probably less than half of the 220....Maybe a 60watts..

My HU is max 200W, i think. 4 channels, thats 50 max a channel. I have a 100W 2 channel amp. 50 max a channel. It would probably sound the same >frown.gif> So I'm getting the 300W and I'm also running the crossovers and tweeters.
