I have to say this again, because alot of people think the ST is slow. Well, of course it's not a GT and it's far from an SS-III, or GT-Four, but it's not slow (compared to regular other cars).
I was driving around one day and stopped to drive onto a sort of highway (one-lane only, but still.. Hey! I live in a small town in Norway, ok?) >

> This turbocharged Volvo is behind me. I have gotten alot of cop attention lately, so I was like.. Yeah, ok.. He will probably pass me and that's ok. I won't race him, not today.. I wait until the road is clear and drive onto the highway and start accelerating normaly. Then I see this stupid Volvo is 10 centimeters away from my ass and kinda pushing me.. Ok, that's it. He is getting served.. I push the pedal down to the floor and he follows until about 90 (this is on a medium steep uphill, keep in mind). Then he starts loosing ground and I continue up to 115 mph and he is way behind me.. I let go of the pedal and let the car continue on it's own until I drop down to legal speed (about 50!) >

I have a stock 99 Celica (ST) 1.8 7A-FE (Euro spec). On this run I didn't even hit rev limit in fourth gear, and it was uphill. People have been saying in different posts that they can't get their cars above 115 mph because of rev-limit and speed-limit and whatnot.. I can't understand why, but I probably don't have that limit on my Euro spec. i still could have used my fourth gear all the way and gotten about 120 I guess, and then switched to fifth gear and continued.. My last car (94' Nissan Primera, yeah I know..) with it's 2.0 liter SR20De engine(swapped in a 96' engine though, not the stock 94') pushed 125 bhp and that wasn't quicker than my 1.8 liter 7A-FE with 116 bhp.. The difference in torque is probably the reason, along with the ability to get the horses down to the wheels, and to the ground.
My Celica is slow compared to any race car, or performance car. But in daily traffic I can pass anyone I want. I raced this Audi stationwagon a while ago too, and he got smoked real bad. It was a 1.8 A4 with turbo. He had 4 people in the car and I had 2. The car should smoke me bad, but I guess he was a sucky driver.
The Celica isn't ment to be a race car (the GT-Four is of course, but not the regular ST and GTs (USDM).. GT JDM on the other hand is rather quick with the 197 bhp 3S-GE engine.
