yep so i found out the head gasket is blown and should be replaced as well as the serpentine belt. I am so mechanically stupid that it hurts to think i cant replace the head gasket myself but i need this car to last untill i get out of college so for another 3 years. oh if anyone one wants to know the mileage its 170k now Woot. The people who looked at the car estimated around $450 for the replacing of it. Just wanted to know if this is reasonable price cause i read earlier post about crazy insane prices and then people who replace the headgasket themselves which I would love to do but know nothing about doing it.
replacing a head gasket is alot of work.. its pretty much taking the engine out.

so 450 is a good price. but then again i'm from california.

Very few people in this world who aren't mechanics will ever replace a head gasket so don't feel bad. Celicas don't have serpentine belts. That is one belt to drive all the accessories. Celicas have a different belt for the A/C, alternator, and water pump. You should get them all replaced at the same time. It's not very expensive. Maybe $100 bucks.
450 is not a bad price at all if you dont have the time or tools to do it. When I blew the headgasket on my old car I was quoted at nothing less than 800, and this was on an '87 1.6L nissan with a throttle body injector. I ended up doing it myself and rebuilt the head while I was at it. It took a good amount of time, but i had the tools, a driveway, and a car to use in the meantime... The headset only cost about 80 bucks, so thats all it cost me. I think ours run for about 120.
amazing price!

wow 450 is still alot though....i know its nothing compared to 800 but still u could get a new engine for a little above that
"a new engine" can you install said engine cuz if not then labor on that will be pushing over 1k.

Speeding is only Illegal...If you Get Caught
you cant buy a new engine for 800 bucks.. You can buy a used engine for around 800 though.. and there is no garentees that this used engine has less wear then yours.

a new 7afe can definitely be had for less than 800, well new to you... but the condition is still 50 / 50.

I doubt when he says he could get a new engine for that price that he means buy a brand new car and take that brand new 0 miles enigne...

When he says new engine he means a swap enigine that would obviously have been used. and yes you can get one for under 800...check ebay

450$ for a HG job is not bad at all. If it needs to be done then get it done. Otherwise sale me the car for 500$ and i will put the 40$ HG on it myself >smile.gif>
hold on,

he has a GT engine not the 7afe.. how much does the gt engine cost?
You can get them used for around 800$
New shortblock would be about 1600$
u can get a used 5sfe with bout 30k on it for under 650 in alot of places my point is i think spending 450 on fixing a head gasket is just too high for an engine of that age...see if at least you could get it rebuilt for round 800-1000 and do everything at once if ur gonna spend 450 on just a gasket
