My celica vs... - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #24634 37 posts Started by dustin15brown
What performance mods will it take me in my 96 5spd celica st to beat my brother's 2004 40th aniversary 4spd automatic v6 mustang. He has 190 HP SAE @ 5,250 rpm; 220 ft lb , 298 Nm @ 2,750 rpm, and has a curv weight of 3,114 lbs. I know it'll take a good ammount from the tuning aspect, but is there ne way around the turbo? Or to be faster than him I'll need to get a T-3 or ct-26? Thanks guys

I drove my friend's '02 Auto V6 Mustang and it felt so slow! The 190hp shouldn't be taken too seriously paired with the auto tranny... that's my feeling at least.
Yeah I know that, and my bro jus got the stang and i drove it this mornin and it IS slow.... but it's still a good ammy faster than the celi i believe
You may be suprised in that it may not take much to edge him out. STs arent much slower than V6 mustangs stock for stock. Especially 5 speed ST vs auto mustang. Remember you have weight on your side, just strip off some of that sound deadening they put on 96+s and then do some simple mods and you may be able to comfortably get a lead on him every time.
Wrong forum maybe? This should go in general forum.
well not really, he's asking wut he can do performace wise to help him.

why exactly would it be in general? I'm not saying you're wrong, but this is a engine and performance question. I am pretty sure i'm in the right place.

Well if you put it that way... not without a lot of money. If you're looking for "insert modification" will add "insert amount of horsepower"... you're not gonna get those answers... because that's not the way things work.

The quick fix... nitrious.

forget nitrous... should i be alright w/ a header and cai? or what should i do... I cant stand te thought of my lil brother having a faster car than mine... it's already 8 yrs newer... and i'd be embarassed to have the laughing stock of mustangs (v6 auto) beat me.
Inexpensive... hmm... remove your a/c, gut out the interior, remove spare tire, and anything else... =)

j/k... if your looking to speed it up, in the long run it isnt going to be cheap.

The way I see it the question is:

"what can I do to my Celica to be able to beat car x in a race"

And that's more of a general question than a real technical question about part x and y of the engine. But whatever, I was just asking >smile.gif>
I have a celica 5 speed and my other car is a v6 200hp automatic, and trust me it will take alot more than header and intake for a celica to take a mustang, my r/t its way faster than my celica, by the way I can beat auto v6 mustangs and camaros with no problem at all in my other car

you have a ST... give up.. or drag race him on the twistys

even with a turbo you are likely to make 170 hp.
from a stop you will lose. but from a roll it should be pretty close. cai, exhaust, pulley should ensure a victory from a roll

For fun, about 7 or 8 months back before I did any major mods to my car, and with 3 other guys in my car I took on a mustang at a red before a quarter mile stretch from a stop. ST Auto tranny vs V6 Auto tranny mustang. Off the line and through first gear he had the advantage, in 2nd I started making up the difference, and in third he pulled away. Probably difference of a second, give or take a couple tenths. With 3 other guys in the car I probably had upwards of 550 lbs in the car. So, i'd say gut it out some, lose excess weight. New headers + CAI won't be a huge improvement, but it might make enough of a difference.
if i'm goin with a turbo i will upgade everything to be at atleast 200 whp
I spank v6 mustangs. They are soo slow. Loud POS if you ask me. A v8 GT is a decent duel for me. Mustang is very heavy.

GT's are all looks, the only decent mustang made is the Cobra.

I'm callng bull ^. I am sorry but that doesn't even sound realistic with an exhaust and intake

and not to mention ur an automatic too.. and yes the stang has about 700 pounds on the celica
LOL... ok. This topic serves ZERO purpose and should be locked to prevent rampant stupidity.

agreed with kwanza lets lock this

but for stupidity sake

arizona haha you wish you could keep up with a GT they are significantly faster then a ST celica well the 00+ mustang gt's atleast
the model b4 is even slower so its not a bad race but will run you for your money
the V6 shouldn't be too much of a deal i think with a cold air and a full exhaust (from the block back i.e header, dp, ect.) you should be easily pulling on a v6 auto mustang
In order to outrun a newer Mustang V6 you'll need to put out about 170-180hp and similar torque, Mustangs are boats but they do all right in a straight line. I have a modded GT and I can only beat the older V6's, newer it's a little bit different. In your case since you came for answers heres a few options:

7AFTE...best choice
4AGZE swap...second best
N/A mods:
CAI
full exhaust and header
shave about 100-150lbs.
port, polish, valve job
small shot (25) of nitrous

Those should be enough to keep up or beat a newer V6, if he ever gets a 2005 or newer you might as well go turbo.
i wanna turbo bad... but to go 200whp.. what all would i need and what kinda prices
Each option is probably going to run you between $2-4 thousand based on the labor mostly. N/A would be the cheapest but you wont get 200 whp without nitrous on a stock (upgraded internals) 7A or a well built N/A motor with a lot of head work, a full head rebuild to your requirements is going to run about $1,500, that will also include port matching the throttle body, so that leaves you with intake manifold, exhaust, header, and intake. I think nitrous is your best bet, a rebuilt 7A with a forged bottom end, intake, full exhaust, and 75 shot of nitrous shouldn't have a problem pushing around 200whp or in that area, I have a knack for guessing drivetrain loss based on the set up and transmission and diff. used, but the Celica has this uncanny ability to make horsepower disappear. Oh yeah the nitrous set up is based on the parts, but you're still looking at around $2,000 w/o labor.

hahahahahha!!!

agreed >smile.gif>
Im gonna go down the nitrous route but I dont think you would be able to get quite as high as 200 whp. What performance mods besides the nitrous do you think would get close to that?
Intake, header, exhaust, and I would upgrade the ignition system. I wouldn't worry about buying expensive plugs, i've run different plugs on the Chevelle and I know a 150 shot of nitrous fouls out all of them pretty quick, I would buy some Autolite plugs they work and if you foul them you lose a whole buck and some change. Of course this is on a carburated car with a dry system so tuning is a little more difficult, but once you tune right get good plugs. Also getting the combustin chamber completely cleaned and polished will help a lot, one of the biggest problems with nitrous is the molecules accumlate in carbon composites that exist in the chamber and after enough accumulation they cause detonation, it's also never recommended to run nitrous if you have pistons with valve pockets due to the same results. The best kit for the Celica on the market will run around a thousand and you'll get a 75 shot max from it, but you can tune it to work exactly like boost. Nitrous is the best source of power, I personally feel it's better because you can get kits to give you more power for less money than any other power adder, but if you don't know what you're doing just like any power adder it will bite you. Also before some one comes here stating the obvious, yes you have to refill.
