Top Speed Limiter - 6G Celicas Forums

I have a 1994 ST Auto. If I'm not mistaken, there is a speed limiter of 111MPH because of the tires the car came with or whatever.

The problem is, this article is for Manual transmission STs only. It says if I were to do it with an Auto transmission, it would **** it up. I was wondering if anyone knew how I could remove the top speed limiter for my auto tranny celi. Thanks!

Good luck ever getting to the 111mph limiter on an ST, or a GT for that matter. It would take you forever, and you really don't need to be going that fast. Unless you have other significant upgrades, and I'm guessing you don't from what's in your info, you'd never need to remove it. I don't mean to bust your chops here man, I'm just telling you how it is.

hmm.... I got up to 110... it takes a while leme tell you... I never noticed a rev limiter but your sayin its at 111 so I duno

Yeah it stops the manual st at 113. You would probably never go that fast in a 1/4 mile race but it is fun to see how fast you can get the car to go, but its more hassle than its worth because I doubt without major upgrades that you would get to 120 sumthin maybey 130 so not even much of a difference.

i got my st up to 120.... i dunno what u guys are talking about... lol manual tho and its a 94... i dont think we came with speed limiters.
the 1/4 doesnt have patience for a ST.... so we make them ST-T's so atleast we'll sound good going slow.

I've gone past 111 in my ST... not that hard... I don't know about an auto though, you probably shouldn't touch it.

what the hell are ya'll talking about about .. when i had my ST-auto .. i was hitting 115+ all the time comeing home from school.... yea it took a while to get up to that speed but up till 90 it was pertty quick ... and on the GT-5spd... i gotten to 120 with no problems... fairly quick .... maybe some of ya'll need to learn out got get ur cars to high speed the right way .. its just about smashing down the throttle ... and before anyone says i shouldn't be driving at such high speeds.... keep it to urself...


edit = and to those of u that want higher speeds u will have to regear ur tranny to get anyother noticable out of it....

Well on my 94 st its not about not knowin how to get up to top speed or that the gear ratio should be changed it just gets cut off when it hits 113 just like it cuts off at i believe 6500 or 6800 rpms in any gear. When i said he would be lucky to get 120 sumthing maybey 130 I meant without major engine upgrades he would be able to go faster than that.

engine mods won't make the car go past its limits it will just get it there quicker... and i think the CA cars have a lower speed limit then the rest of the country ... so if u can only get to 113 and shut off doesn't mean other can't go past it... cause i should did when i had my st ...

Good point california rules are gay. Not every part you install will get you a higher top speed but come on now when you get certain engine mods that make significant gains in hp then your top speed is gonna be raised.

well yes if those mods affect the ecm ... in some way .... but then again speed is controlled by the transmission thats what spins the wheels not the engine..... thats why race teams speed 100's of thousands of dollors on transmissions...

The ST has will hit the REV limiter (not the speed limiter) at 126 mph because of the gearing, however the speed is governed at approx. 116.

The GT tranny goes to about 120 and poops out.

my ST is rev limited (oh and you can't rev up to 6500, or 6800rpm on a 6gc fyi) well maybe on a gt ST's can only go to about 5800 which sucks so if sumone knows which wire to cut just freakin tell me already
cause at 115-120 i don't wanna be hitting that stupid cut off

i have a gt and i've hit 123 mph, and i got a ticket to prove it. btw my car is bone stock except for my rims.

my car does this:

0-30 -slow
30-80 -fast as hell as rpms go waaay into 5Ks
Note vibration startes at 70 and dissapears at 80
80-90 -you dont even feel like you are speeding up
90-115 my car tries to balance itself which pisses me off.. it tries to maintain its speed at 3K rpm.. finally as soon as it hits 115 it wont go no more.... starts to slow down but you can keep it at 113 if you keep your foot on the gas.

I heard there was supposed to be a computer reprogramming device. They have th0ose on ebay but obviously i would never trty something that has no manufacturer's name in auction.

I've hit about 125 in my GT and pegged the tach, 4.10 gears suck. The ST manual has about the same gearing, and the auto is around 2.xxx so it should be capable of going past 125mph.

You guys are acting like it's easy to get to up at those high speeds. It's not. I've done around 125 in my celica, but it took forever. The car can cruise at 110-115 alright, but there's not point. It's just not a good idea to go that fast, especially if you don't have proper upgrades. Whatever though, go kill yourselves, there'll be a few less idiots for me to deal with.

I could understand removing a limiter if there would be a significant increase in top end, but on the ST it really isn't worth messing with, the full size Chevy and GMC trucks have an electronic limiter that can be removed with a programmer. The factory limit is 100mph but after the mods I could get mine to 140mph before it would start to top out, I never pegged it though.

On older vehicles there is a speed sensor located somewhere along the drivetrain, but i'm not sure on the ST, the older non-Vortec Chevys had them in the rear left axle. Actually the shield behind the drum was the sensor.

nah its not a big deal its 1 wire that you just hook up to a switch to cut it temporarily b4 it hits the ecu its really no biggy
and it really doesn't take that long to get up to 115+ mph

and proper mods?
umm a decent alignment and balanced tires you should be fine lol just don't wack into any pot holes or cars lol

and hmm maybe me in my ST doin 130mph
with my suspension dropped on its balls and 18" rims will fly past bulldog and drop him into a tree? one less hillbilly to deal with

get a grip high speed doesn't mean a thing anymore unless its in excess of 150mph
my ST is prefectly able to hit 140.....given the time cause oh wait we're not lookin at a performance motor? well that is until i get my 7afte project finished then hehe goin past 130 will be easy

if you are doing regular street racing 100 is all you really need. past that is just crazy because you dont have much time to react. and the most i really race is light to light which isnt possible to get to 100.

Hey, I see were your going with this. You live in northern Virgina, and I live in West Virgina. It's really not that far away. Come on up here. Or I can come down. You want to talk like that, then you'd better back it up. It'd probably be quicker for you to get here sence you can run that 130.
