Targa Top On The Way!!! - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #23587 9 posts Started by blaque_6thGen
Hey guys, guess what! I am actually going to get a targa top for my ST! >biggrin.gif> I already spoke to the guy that is going to be doing my bodywork and he said that I could do it, I just needed to make sure that I got some kind of support on the underside of the car to make sure that the car doesn't bend due to the lack of support (especeially since its a hatch). He kind of implied that I souhld look for it myself and he would help me put it on, I'm just not sure where I would get something like that or if I am able to to have someone make some kind of brace out of material similar to roll cage piping.

I asked him if a roll cage would do the trick. He said that it would help but it would not give me the complete support that I will need.

Do you guys have any ideas?

Thanks!!

ur gunna need to do alooot of custom welding.. me and my pops made his 1963 nova a convertable.. and its gunna take time and alot of metal lol

its a job.. gl.. ur gunna need a professional
#1) yes your goin to want a full roll cage made
#2) as for under the car hmmm not a single clue there
squared pipe for sure but as for placement and thickness, ect...
PROFESSIONAL
dont waste your time bro, I was going to do it, after I did all my research, for parts and labor it would cost $4,000. Probably more than the cars worth, lol. Use the money for an engine swap. But hey, I agree with you, it would look cool.

some friends recommended that i go to a place that does custom cages for truck chassis and i could get a whole lot done there support wise (they would weld a big X on the bottom of the chassis). My friends also then told me that if i do follow through, i should make it strictly show because all of the abuse from racing will make the chassis bend either way. as far as i know the kit for the top is going to be about a grand and i believe that the labor will be about the same. so with everything, i'm projecting about $2,500.

good luck with that, make sure to take pics of the progress

I use to work in a kit car shop, and cut plenty of fieros tops off,not to mention the numerous bugs and gias we made into convertibles. Usually an x shaped brace at the bottom works. For a targa, a brace from front tire to rear tire on each side of the body should work. All verts have them. good luck, I think its possible
yeah, chop some parts from a vert frame in the yard....they dont have a top at all for support....
Dude before u go with the targo make it an stick. no car like the one ur gonna make should be a auto. seriously. but thats just my opinion.
