ive searched this term and i know how to change the led's fairly easily. what im still in the dark about is the backlight. i want the knobs, etc to be blue. how do i do this without painting because im afraid that will make it too dim? i read i need 5mm LED's with 220 ohm resistors, but i dont know where to put them.

I would be interested to know how to do that too. the bulbs are like 74's....12v ??amps. the leds are like 3v and 30ma. Their are more than the three 74's, theres the real flat leds that are for the buttons. those would have to be taken out with a soldering iron.

the soldering will be a piece of cake. i have been in hobbies in the past that required soldering (modding psx's, fixing electrical motors, hobby level rc cars, etc.). i know im stupid, but i still dont have a clear picture on what to do for the backlighting.

yeah, thats how i didnt know how i didnt see it. i went through your links and didnt see it. went through again and there it was.
would 3 of these in place of the stock bulbs work fine? seems like they should be bright enough and have the light scattered all around instead of having "dark spots."

i'm starting to think a good way to get the climate control coloured would be to order 3 more toyota bulbs (toyota part num: 84999-70007). and 3 num 74 blue led bulbs. then transplant the leds (with resistors and any other parts on them) into the toyota bulb sockets.
not sure if the current would be correct though. but i *think* the worst case would be a fried led.
i think ideally i'd want to modify the climate control unit to take 194 bulbs. but that seems like quite a mod.

im just trying to find a way to put LED's in the stock sockets. i heard its hard to get the bulbs out of the sockets without breaking them though. when i have a day off ill give it a check. anyone know offhand what size the stock bulbs are?
if you do a red wide angle led with 1.7v & 20ma then you need a 1/4 watt (preferably 1/2w) resistor with about 550 ohms. they sell these things pre-made on online stores and ebay with socket and all. This is pretty expensive though.

yup the back of the little pictures. all of them light up except the defroster button.
what type of paint did you use? im afraid if i try to make them blue, it will come out a greenish bluish color.
just some acrylic paint i had laying around from when i built models. didnt feel like spray painting neither. i like using the paintbrush better. its more precise than a spray can. o and if its a pretty warm day, you can leave it in the sun for like 2 min. and it should be dry and ready for another coat.
