strange sound from front right - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #22339 16 posts Started by soltrain
This just started about two days ago.
When the car is moving (not necessarily under acceleration) I'll hear this soft tapping, clunking from the front right side. It doesn't occur in regular intervals, and is pretty soft, I can only hear it if I turn off the radio.

The sound doesn't seem associated with bumps or turning the wheel, as I can hear it when I'm just going in a straight line.

I've just had the ST sway bars put on, but from what I've read, this doesn't seem like the sound it would make if they were rubbing.

Any ideas?

loose control arm? CV joint?

check for any grease on the wheel....chances are it will be the axle

check ur battery tray ....

[TeamNJCT
battery tray is on the front left, at least on my ST it is.
its a mouse trying to get out!
no no, its not the mice... its our pigeons powering our engine. i was told that my car is powered by pigeons before i put on the exhaust and are intake. hilarious stuff. cept for it was from a friend who owns a straight 8 truck that has like a ... huge lift and nice exhaust.

the 1/4 doesnt have patience for a ST.... so we make them ST-T's so atleast we'll sound good going slow.
If it is like a clicking sound that is independent of the engine rpm, and seems to increase and decrease with just vehicle speed (not engine rpms) then it might by your wheel bearing. I just had to replace one of mine.
CV Joint, Wheel Bearing, or Brake Assembly
It's definately independent of RPM. I can check if it's the wheel bearing by jacking up the car and spinning the wheels ya?
For CV joint, do I check the boot? Or was that where I jack up the car, take the wheel and try to move it around?
I tried that method and it didn't work for me. The mechanic told me the car has to be under load to make the noise (i.e. weight on the wheels). Mine was the wheel bearing.

Happened to me. Check the axle first. The mechanic said he had worked on two other sixth gens that had 2 loose bolts. My two bolts fell out and I got stranded. >frown.gif>
i had a similar problem. sometimes when i accelerated from a standstill or broke to a standstill, i would hear this loud popping/crunching sound from the front right side. it ended up my control arms. they needed 2 be tightened.
didn't see any grease on the wheel, I'm goin to the mechanic tommorow to see whats goin on
I have the same problem (i think) its like a click/grind sounded mixed, and it only happens every now and then. Tell me what you find out.

Welp, it turns out it was the ST sway bar that I just had put in. I thought I was getting a newly designed 'no rub' bar (the old bars rubbed and caused this sound), but I didn't.

Went to ST today and got the new version - no more sounds. >smile.gif>

On the downside, it looks like my CV boot is bust because there's grease all over the axle. Shop quoted me 200 something to replace. Ug.
