Hi, I'm planning to buy a celica with a swapped 3s-gte motor in it. I currently own a completely stock 94 celica gt. When it is time to smog the swap car can I take in the stock celica and try to pass it off for the swapped one or will they actually take a look at my VIN number etc. Wishful thinking?
Plan to pass CA emissions with 3sgte - 6G Celicas Forums
Heh... doubtful. I wouldn't risk trying to fool a smog tech... cause if you get caught, he'll definately want to have your ass smoked...

pull out an injector and run mad lean. You should pass
I wouldn't pass visual inspection though because of a lack of many emissions controls like the egr and whatnot. I'm thinking that the smog guys dont look that closely at your car?
i doubt the visual inspectioin gets done. these guys do like 10 cars a day, all they care about is if it passes the tail pipe sniffer and if you have a cat.
i used to worry about it... then i went to a local midas shop, they thought my car was cool, and passed it.

Visual inspection is mandatory... there's really no way to fool it. I mean... the tech's gotta open the hood and check various things... Unless the car is OBD2... there's really no way to do a smog without opening up the hood. It may not be as strict elsewhere... but this is CA we're talking about here...

obd2 car, he plugs in the scanner
non obd2, he opens the hood, checks timing, checks EGR valve, and then runs the car.
and they do check the vin
if you wanna try something like that
buy and register an ST, then put the plates and stickers on the swapped car
when the time comes to smog, put the plates on the ST and take her in.
make sure they are the same color car

yup that sounds like the way to do it..
the sniffer is the easy part... a 3s with a good cat will pass emisions of a 5s or 7a no problem.
how did DMC do it all these years? Isn't it also the seller of the used car's responsibility to have it smogged before sale?
DMC is in the military... car has texas plates cause his home of residence is in texas...
